The Breakdown: Fox Sunday in 2023-24 (The Simpsons, Krapopolis, The Great North and more!)

It's time for a journey through the Fox Sunday schedule in 2023-24...

Because of their unconventional production schedules, the Fox cartoons were ready to go in the fall unlike almost all the other scripted programs. Fox used the NFL to showcase new cartoon Krapopolis, which didn't do as well as it appears here because it includes three occasions late in the fall when it got switched to the direct The OT lead-in. The 9/8c hour also struggled as Bob's Burgers and Family Guy did not hold up as well as usual on the non-NFL Sundays, even hitting 0.2s a few times.

But if Bob's and Family Guy were looking bleak, things spiraled into disaster when they were largely left out of the Sunday mix in the winter and spring. The Great North was not capable of anchoring the 9/8c hour, and another newbie Grimsburg showed up at 9:30 to horrific results.

The spring trends were better, as the shows generally didn't drop any lower, plus Fox introduced the bomb Housebroken a year ago (though Grimsburg still couldn't match it).

The Simpsons: Sort of a tough one to piece together because it was shifted to 8:30 for some of its usual post-NFL fall Sundays. The winter average looks atrocious but it was actually just two episodes total. As always, I think the spring trend is the most reliable indicator of where the show is at, and those numbers continue to deteriorate steadily but not all that speedily. Grade: C.

Krapopolis: Again, the wide variety of NFL lead-ins and 8:30 episodes in the fall are a bit tough to read. I'm fairly confident it looked worse than The Simpsons but there aren't a lot of comparisons with the same-sized lead-ins. In the winter/spring, it was bad, at least a little worse than The Great North, but also pretty clearly not as much of an eyesore as Grimsburg. Grade: D+.

Bob's Burgers: The show only aired three episodes after the new year, when its ratings usually tank, and still only managed a single-digit Plus gain. It looked about the same as Family Guy in the fall (that is, fairly shaky) but didn't get the "honor" of completely cratering on Wednesdays in the spring. So I'm gonna go a tick higher than I did with Family Guy but I'm not sure it deserves it. Grade: C.

The Great North: Definitely got the short end of the stick scheduling-wise, perhaps even worse than Family Guy, by completely missing out on those juicy fall 8:30 ratings, then having to air between two weak newbies. Comparing this 40 against its winter/spring ratings from last year (46) it's actually only -14% which honestly doesn't seem that bad, but it still wasn't remotely capable of holding the night together with Bob's and Family Guy out of the mix. Grade: C-.

Family Guy: Already updated.

Grimsburg: Even among a bunch of very weak performers in the winter/spring, this was the clear weakest link, dropping as much or more out of Great North as Krapopolis did after Simpsons. And keep in mind that the 40 average for the season includes a 150 Plus for its January preview! Without that, it's just a 31, which would be pretty easily the lowest original series on the big four. (And a point lower than season one of Welcome to Flatch!) Maybe this is a bit too harsh given the conditions but since I haven't given one out all year I'm wrapping things up with a Grade: F.
