Following just one year as a Disney+-only streaming property, Dancing with the Stars returned to ABC with a bang, handily outrating its already impressive fall 2021 season (145).

After four Celebrity Jeopardy! eps in January (following a Wednesday run in the fall), the scripted lineup returned in February with some reshuffling, as Will Trent benefited from the 8/7c hour and The Rookie slid to 9/8c, while longtime Monday vet The Good Doctor quietly wrapped its run at 10/9c.

Dancing with the Stars Fall: I might have considered an A in a vacuum but it needs to be ranked a notch behind other staples like The Bachelor and Survivor which had much bigger surges. Still, it was roughly +10% vs. two years ago, and another year of growth like this could put it very close to its historic highs from circa 2010-11. Grade: A-.

Will Trent: It's yet another example of big growth in a move to 8/7c, but I would not put this on the same level as the two flashiest recent examples (S.W.A.T. two years ago and The Rookie last year). Both of those shows had bigger seasonal growth even though they aired only a portion of their seasons at 8/7c, and backed it up by doing very well at 10/9c in the other part of the season. Will Trent in season one was not really that different from how The Rookie looked in its 10/9c years, and didn't get the same kind of pop (rating substantially behind Rookie itself in the slot last year). However, it still did fine for this slot historically and held up pretty well in the spring. Grade: B.

The Rookie: On the flip side, moving out of the 8/7c hour can look artificially brutal. 81 Plus is still enough to outrate all of its Sunday 10/9c seasons, and it looked similar to the Plus ratings after American Idol in the winter/spring of those seasons. It may be a bit stronger than it was then, but I'd still say this is a little weaker than its breakout performance a year ago. Grade: C+.

The Good Doctor: Finally moved away from its big reality lead-ins on Monday, it was a brutal end for a one-time breakout that never really stopped the bleeding, but had mostly kept it at a pretty manageable level. It should have been more competitive with Will Trent's numbers in the hour last year. Grade: D.
