FINALS UPDATE: Home Economics (0.4),
Survivor (1.0),
Chicago PD (0.8) and
The Masked Singer (1.0) adjusted up while
In the Dark (0.0, -0.2) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- The first half of ABC Wednesday took a significant 0.15ish dip in week two. That meant The Wonder Years (0.50) was still north of 90% retention out of The Goldbergs, but the block in general is looking soft. The second half of the night at least didn't get much worse after struggling last week; Home Economics (0.36) held up a bit better than the other comedies, and A Million Little Things (0.31) picked up a couple hundredths.
- On Fox, The Masked Singer (1.01) and Alter Ego (0.47) were up from their Thursday episodes as indicated in the table, but Ego was still down a sharp 28% from its premiere in this timeslot a week ago.
- NBC held up better, especially with Chicago Med (0.74) and Chicago Fire (0.85), while CBS had a good week two hold for Survivor (1.00) and an improved Big Brother (0.94) in its two-hour finale.
FINALS UPDATE: Bachelor in Paradise (0.8),
FBI (0.7) and
La Brea (0.8) adjusted up while
Stargirl (0.1) and
Supergirl (0.1) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- NBC's new drama La Brea (0.77) pulled off the most impressive series premiere of the new season to date, holding more than 80% of its The Voice lead-in (0.95).
- In a three-way new show battle at 9/8c, FBI: International (0.52) moved earlier and dropped by more than 10% from last week, and was actually outrated by FBI: Most Wanted (0.54) at 10/9c. Fox's Our Kind of People (0.34) was down just a hundredth in its second week, despite a much bigger drop from The Resident (0.43) at 8/7c.
La Brea
Tuesdays, 9/8c, NBC
Status: RENEWED for next season (confirmed on 11/12/2021)
The Good Doctor
Mondays, 10/9c, ABC
Status: RENEWED for next season (confirmed on 3/30/2022)
FINALS UPDATE: The Neighborhood (0.7) and
The Voice (1.0) adjusted up while
Dancing with the Stars (0.7) and
The Good Doctor (0.4, -0.2) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- The news didn't improve for last week's slow-starting newbie dramas, with NBC's Ordinary Joe (0.36) plummeting by 31% week-to-week. The Big Leap (0.25) was not down a huge percent from last week's disastrous start, but it came on a night when 9-1-1 (0.85) perked up noticeably, so its retention dropped to a horrible 29%. The best week two newbie hold was NCIS: Hawai'i (0.50) which was down just a hundredth on a steady-ish night for CBS in general.
- And ABC ended up with a soft night after getting slammed by preemptions in finals updates, with Dancing with the Stars (0.72) taking a big dip from last week and the season premiere of The Good Doctor (0.41) posting a new series low.
FINALS UPDATE: The Rookie (0.4),
Sunday Night Football (5.6, +1.2),
NFL Overrun (6.2, +3.0),
The OT (2.9, +0.4) and
The Simpsons (1.2) adjusted up.
WHAT MATTERS:- ABC launched most of its regular Sunday lineup with Celebrity Wheel of Fortune (0.40), Supermarket Sweep (0.44) and The Rookie (0.36), but the night was mostly derailed by the Global Citizen Live charity event (0.20) in the 7/6c hour, which had less than a third of usual occupant America's Funniest Home Videos' average in the slot last year. It was a particularly tough return for Wheel of Fortune, which barely hit half of its series low from last winter.
- Fox cartoons The Simpsons (1.18), The Great North (0.68), Bob's Burgers (0.62) and Family Guy (0.58) returned with a national NFL lead-in, while CBS aired the Tony Awards (0.37), down by half from 2019 after getting cancelled (alongside all of Broadway) in 2020.

(0.4) adjusted up while
Dynasty (0.0) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:
FINALS UPDATE: Bull (R)
(0.2) and
The Masked Singer (1.0) adjusted up.
WHAT MATTERS:- NBC's Law and Order: SVU (0.79) impressed in its two-hour season premiere, rising nearly a tenth from the June finale and obliterating all of its results from last fall. At 10/9c, sophomore Law and Order: Organized Crime (0.60) was on the low end of its season one raw numbers.
- Fox's The Masked Singer (0.97) and Alter Ego (0.44) finished their two-night premiere weeks. The former was off by 13% from the Wednesday premiere, but Alter Ego dropped almost a third and saw its retention fall well below 50%.

FINALS UPDATE: The Goldbergs (0.7),
The Wonder Years (0.7),
Survivor (1.1),
Chicago Med (0.8),
Chicago Fire (0.9),
Chicago PD (0.9) and
The Masked Singer (1.1) adjusted up.
WHAT MATTERS:- ABC had a passable start in the first half of its Wednesday comedy night, with The Goldbergs (0.70) looking steady-ish in Plus and the new reboot of The Wonder Years (0.67) dropping just a touch in the 8:30 half-hour. At 9/8c, The Conners (0.65) aired a live episode, and season two of Home Economics (0.41) had a weak start in its new 9:30 timeslot. A Million Little Things (0.29) rounded out the night poorly, at almost an entire tenth below its June finale.
- On the unscripted side, Survivor returned to CBS with a two-hour premiere (1.06) after fully sitting out the 2020-21 season. This was down just 16% from its fall premiere two years ago, and thus a considerable upgrade in Plus (probably marking the biggest Survivor premiere in that metric since the mid-aughts). Big Brother (0.61) suffered considerably in the 10/9c hour.
- Survivor came just shy of topping the night against Fox's The Masked Singer (1.11), which took a big dip vs. the 1.57 fall 2020 premiere. (Though it was still down a bit less y2y than the last spring premiere). TMS launched newbie singing competition Alter Ego (0.65). Ego did not look as promising as past post-TMS premieres like I Can See Your Voice and LEGO Masters, but perhaps a hair better than the spring 2021 occupant Game of Talents (which had a 0.73 out of a 1.31).
- And Chicago Med, Chicago Fire and Chicago PD began their fourth season as a trio on NBC Wednesday. Med (0.78) had easily the worst year-to-year trend of the three, in part because it had a somewhat flukishly high premiere last year, while Fire (0.86) and PD (0.87) looked healthy as ever.
This is a sortable list of series and ratings averages for the 2021-22 season, including every series that has a page in the
SpotVault or
War of 18-49. For the first time, it is also a
filterable list, meaning you can boil the table down to just one network, one category of programming or only new shows. (The striped formatting looks kinda ugly when filtered, but hopefully that is worth the added functionality.)

FINALS UPDATE: Bachelor in Paradise (0.9) and
FBI: Most Wanted (0.7) adjusted up.
WHAT MATTERS:- CBS completed its triple-FBI night with the launch of FBI: International (0.59) at 10/9c, with FBI (0.72) and FBI: Most Wanted (0.66) sliding an hour earlier. International certainly outperformed NCIS: Hawaii retention-wise, and it was also a beneficial move for Most Wanted, which actually edged last season's premiere in raw numbers.
- Fox debuted Lee Daniels drama Our Kind of People (0.35) after The Resident (0.50) at soft levels, but for now it was at least not a The Big Leap-level disaster.
- The Voice (1.09) impressed again in its second night, up a hundredth from both its October 2020 Tuesday premiere as well as from this week's Monday premiere. New Amsterdam (0.54) returned in the 10/9c hour and was not down much from last season's premiere (though still just a hair better than Ordinary Joe on Monday).

FINALS UPDATE: The Voice (1.1) adjusted up while
Time100 (0.3) and
The Big Leap (0.3) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- Premiere Monday saw a trio of underwhelming new drama premieres. Fox's The Big Leap (0.29) fared worst out of the gate, with just 38% retention of its 9-1-1 lead-in (0.76). And it's not like this was some huge episode of 9-1-1; the show was way down from its last premiere (a 1.2 in January) and couldn't even get close to its 1.0ish level from the late spring.
- On NBC, Ordinary Joe (0.52) was a little below 50% of its lead-in from The Voice (1.08), whose first Ariana Grande episode had the best year-to-year trend among the returnees on Premiere Monday. For Ordinary Joe, this looked pretty similar to how Bluff City Law started a couple years ago (0.81 out of a 1.7), which is not promising.
- CBS had the first-ever timeslot move for NCIS (0.73), airing in the 9/8c hour and launching new spin-off NCIS: Hawai'i. The 70%ish retention for Hawai'i was markedly worse than the 90%ish level for the Los Angeles and New Orleans premieres, though this one did have the disadvantage of the 10/9c hour. NCIS along with its lead-in comedy hour The Neighborhood (0.63) and Bob Hearts Abishola (0.54) were all down 20%ish from last fall's premieres.
- ABC held off for a week on the return of The Good Doctor but did have the return of Dancing with the Stars (0.92), which could not keep up with the breakout season last year but still had a better Plus than the last few premieres before that.
