The Breakdown: Fox Tuesday in 2020-21 (The Resident, NEXT, Prodigal Son)

It's time for a journey through the Fox Tuesday schedule in 2020-21...

NOTE: In addition to classic A18-49+, Breakdown posts with 2019-20 ratings also use CVPlus, comparing spring ratings against a higher league average due to viewership inflation from COVID-19 stay-at-home orders. See here for more. Also see here for information on the 2020-21 league average.

Bad as the Monday night ratings were for Fox in the fall, Tuesday was somehow even worse. The network dredged up Cosmos: Possible Worlds, the sequel series to Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey that was originally produced for Fox but ended up airing on only Nat Geo in early 2020. It was paired with another leftover 2019-20 drama newbie called NEXT. 0.3's and 0.2's were the norm.

Returnee medical drama The Resident returned to the 8/7c hour after the new year, paired with sophomore Prodigal Son in a move from Tuesday. While Prodigal got much weaker compared with its serviceable season one, the night as a whole was still pretty close to last year's ratings.

Both shows took drops in the spring. The Resident went just a bit behind its COVID-boosted spring 2020 numbers (even in CVPlus) while Prodigal fell far behind the last episodes of Empire.

The Resident: It just keeps chugging along, sort of a modern-day Bones (and I guess 9-1-1 would be the House in this analogy). I'm not sold that Fox particularly likes it, but this kind of consistency has remained just a little too valuable for now. Grade: B-.

NEXT: Just want to note that a bunch of its late-season ratings are rounded 0.2's... so if they were actually all very high 0.2's then maybe it wasn't much weaker than Filthy Rich? As it is, it looks like it was quite a bit weaker. 38 Plus for a scripted show in-season is really dire. Grade: F.

Prodigal Son: Moving from post-9-1-1 to post-Resident was a significant downgrade for sure, but not nearly significant enough to explain this. Could probably justify something like C- or D+ if not for the DVR numbers, which even percentage-wise were not much better than on Monday last year. So a ton of interest was lost even among the delayed set. Grade: D.
