It's time for a journey through the ABC Friday schedule in 2019-20...

After big growth last winter/spring due to the expansion of 20/20, ABC got one last segment with that kind of growth in the fall. But 20/20 wasn't doing all the heavy lifting in producing a spike of this size; a lot of it came from American Housewife, as the veteran comedy made the move to Friday and proved a considerable upgrade on last year's anchor Fresh Off the Boat. Fresh, meanwhile, had more modest gains vs. Speechless at 8:30.

The winter meant it was finally time for two-hour 20/20 to get compared against itself, and that slowed the growth rate considerably. Housewife had a slower winter as well, but only aired three episodes in this period before taking nearly two months off to prepare for a return to Wednesday, where it would inherit the Modern Family slot.

One of the biggest winners on all of TV in the viewership-inflated spring was Shark Tank, as the longtime Friday staple aired its first original episodes on the night in almost three years and blew away the season highs from its fall/winter Sunday episodes.

American Housewife: Already updated.
Shark Tank: This was a roller coaster of a season. It showed some signs of promise in its Sunday fall episodes, was not good in its Sunday January episodes, did great on Friday but bombed in its random couple Wednesday episodes. All of that adds up to even in Plus vs. last season, which was all on Sunday including a post-Idol run. The full body of work might be more like a B but the performance on Friday was so memorable that I upgrade it to Grade: B+.
Fresh Off the Boat: Though it was an improvement on Speechless, it was a pretty quiet end for this series, as the weak link between Housewife and 20/20. It all aired pre-pandemic so the CVPlus is a little better than the Plusy2y above, but not a huge timeslot downgrade since its Housewife lead-in did well. Grade: C.
20/20: As Dateline has proven for years, being two hours will always boost the ratings, so I don't put much weight in the fall growth vs. when it was still just one hour. And the spring numbers probably got a lot of help from Shark Tank. Winter is the closest thing to an apples-to-apples comparison and it suggests it was about even with last year. Grade: B.
