Spotted Ratings, Wednesday 10/30/19

FINALS UPDATE: Survivor (1.2), Chicago Fire (1.2) and World Series (6.1, +0.5) adjusted up while Single Parents (0.6) and SEAL Team (0.6) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Game 7 of the World Series (5.6), as Game 7's do, went massively ahead of the rest of the series: more than 50% ahead of the Game 6 prelim, and close to double the game on Wednesday of last week.
  • With another dose of Halloween help, ABC's comedies held up; The Goldbergs (0.9) and Schooled (0.7) matched last week, while Modern Family (1.0) and Single Parents (0.7) matched two weeks ago when they were last together. The net's only decliner was Stumptown, falling to its first 0.5 at 10/9c.
  • NBC's Chicago trio (1.2/1.1/1.1) also hung in there impressively; Fire at 9/8c was the only week-to-week decliner, while Med and PD were even.
  • CBS' Survivor (1.1) took a hit, but the dramas SEAL Team (0.7) and S.W.A.T. (0.5) looked pretty normal. And the CW's Riverdale (0.2) and Nancy Drew (0.1) were both down, putting Nancy at her first 0.1.

Spotted Ratings, Tuesday 10/29/19

FINALS UPDATE: Mixed-ish (0.8) and World Series (4.1, +0.3) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Game 6 of the World Series (3.4/3.8/4.1) is headed for easily the series' highest ratings to date, but the return of the ABC comedy lineup hung in there nicely thanks to its usual Halloween bump. The Conners (1.2), Bless This Mess (0.8), Mixed-ish (0.7) and especially Black-ish (0.8) were all up vs. two weeks ago (Mixed-ish tied last week). Emergence (0.5) returned flat at 10/9c.
  • NBC was not quite as resilient, with The Voice (1.2) and This Is Us (1.4) eyeing new season lows while New Amsterdam (0.8) tied its season low. The CW was flat with The Flash (0.5) and Arrow (0.3). CBS (0.8/0.6/0.5) was in repeat mode.

Spotted Ratings, Monday 10/28/19

FINALS UPDATE: Dancing with the Stars (0.9), The Good Doctor (R) (0.4, -0.2) and Bluff City Law (0.5) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • CBS Monday continued its slow upward momentum with Bob Hearts Abishola inching up to 0.8 for the first time since the series premiere, while lead-in The Neighborhood (0.9) and the legal dramas (0.7/0.7) were even.
  • NBC was steady-ish with The Voice (1.2/1.3) and Bluff City Law (0.6), while Fox aired its first entertainment programming in a week and saw a decline for 9-1-1 (1.3) and a steady Prodigal Son (0.7). The CW (0.2/0.2) matched last week.
  • ABC's Dancing with the Stars (1.0) and repeat of The Good Doctor (0.6) are pending preemptions due to Monday Night Football.

Spotted Ratings, Sunday 10/27/19

FINALS UPDATE: Shark Tank (0.6), NFL Overrun (5.9, +0.9), Sunday Night Football (5.7, +0.6) and World Series (2.7, +0.3) adjusted up while The Rookie (0.5), 60 Minutes (1.7, -0.6), God Friended Me (0.8), Madam Secretary (0.4), Football Night in America p2 (1.6, -0.5), Football Night in America p3 (2.9, -1.4) and World Series Pregame (1.0, -0.2) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • The CBS primetime lineup of 60 Minutes (3.0/1.5), God Friended Me (0.9), NCIS: Los Angeles (0.7/0.6) and Madam Secretary (0.5) started 11 minutes late and may experience some downward adjustment in the finals.
  • ABC led off its Sunday with a second dose of It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (0.7), but it was no help to Kids Say the Darndest Things (0.6) or Shark Tank (0.5). The Rookie (0.6) managed to grow on its Shark Tank lead-in at 10/9c. The CW (0.3/0.2) matched last week.
  • Game 5 of the World Series (2.4/2.5/2.4) looks to be down huge from last year's fifth and final game (3.9 prelim -> 4.6 final), which had a national NFL lead-in while this one did not. On the year-ago evening the Series actually won head-to-head against Sunday Night Football, but it was not even in the ballpark of last night's SNF (5.1/5.3/4.8).

Spotted Ratings, Friday 10/25/19

FINALS UPDATE: World Series (2.8) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Against Game 3 of the World Series (2.4/2.7/2.8), it was another night of stability or even growth for the competing regular broadcast lineups. Following even comedies American Housewife (0.6) and Fresh Off the Boat (0.5), 20/20 (0.6) was up two tenths. CBS was up with Hawaii Five-0 (0.7) and Magnum P.I. (0.6), while Blue Bloods (0.6) was steady. And NBC got a rebound from The Blacklist (0.5). The CW (0.2/0.1) matched last week.

Spotted Ratings, Wednesday 10/23/19

FINALS UPDATE: SEAL Team (0.6) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • NBC's Chicago trio (1.2/1.2/1.1) came back to earth somewhat after last week's crossover, but Chicago Med still had its outright second-highest rating of the season, while Chicago Fire and Chicago PD tied their pre-crossover season highs.
  • ABC was only partially original for the second straight night, with the original comedies The Goldbergs (0.9), Schooled (0.7) and Single Parents (0.6) all losing a tenth while Modern Family (0.5) was in repeat mode. A Prince Harry/Meghan Markle special (0.5) rounded out the night at 10/9c.
  • On CBS, Survivor (1.3) gave back a tenth after last week's season high, while SEAL Team (0.7) was even and S.W.A.T. (0.6) edged up. Riverdale (0.3) rallied a bit for the CW, and Nancy Drew posted another 0.2.
  • Game 2 of the World Series (2.6/2.9/3.0) was barely down from the Game 1 prelims and should have a better year-to-year trend than Game 1.

Wednesday, October 23, 2019

Spotted Ratings, Tuesday 10/22/19

FINALS UPDATE: It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1.3) and World Series (3.1, +0.2) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Game 1 of the World Series (2.9) was down roughly 15% vs. last year's opener, which had a 3.4 prelim and adjusted up to a 3.7 final.
  • ABC had a nice showing from Halloween specials It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown (1.2) and Toy Story of TERROR! (1.0), both of which were up year-to-year vs. last year's Thursday airings. But they didn't provide much boost to the comedy hour of Mixed-ish (0.7) and Black-ish (0.7), and ABC rounded out the night with a Diane Sawyer interview at 10/9c (0.5).
  • The regular entertainment lineups were pretty resilient against the World Series; NBC was even with The Voice (1.3) and slightly up with This Is Us (1.6) and New Amsterdam (0.9), while CBS (1.1/0.8/0.7) was even to slightly down. The CW (0.5/0.3) matched last week.

Spotted Ratings, Monday 10/21/19

FINALS UPDATE: Dancing with the Stars (0.7, -0.2), The Good Doctor (0.8, -0.2), Prodigal Son (0.7), All American (0.2) and Black Lightning (0.2) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • An uptick for Fox's 9-1-1 (1.5) put it on top of the Monday broadcast ratings, two tenths ahead of a declining The Voice (1.3) on NBC. Their respective lead-outs Prodigal Son (0.8) and Bluff City Law (0.5) both matched last week.
  • It was a mostly up night for CBS, with only Bob Hearts Abishola (0.7) matching last week while The Neighborhood (0.9), All Rise (0.7) and Bull (0.7) were up a notch and tied their season highs from premiere week.
  • ABC (0.9/1.0/1.0) and the CW (0.3/0.3) prelims are pending Monday Night Football preemptions.

Monday, October 21, 2019

Spotted Ratings, Sunday 10/20/19

FINALS UPDATE: Sunday Night Football (6.6, +0.8) and NFL Overrun (6.4, +1.6) adjusted up while 60 Minutes (0.7), Football Night in America p2 (0.9, -1.1), Football Night in America p3 (2.9, -2.0), The Simpsons (2.0) and Bob's Burgers (1.0) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Airing its Treehouse of Horror episode after a national NFL lead-in, The Simpsons (2.1) preliminarily its post-NFL rating from two weeks ago. That'd be a nice showing if it holds, since the Fox NFL lead-in was a lot weaker than two weeks ago, but it could edge down in finals because it started a couple minutes late. The Fox lineup continued with recently renewed Bless the Harts (1.1), down from its prelim two weeks ago, but Bob's Burgers (1.1) and Family Guy (1.2) held on nicely from there.
  • There was a sizable drop for week three of Kids Say the Darndest Things (0.6) on ABC, but Shark Tank (0.6) and The Rookie (0.6) matched last week.
  • The without-NFL CBS lineup was down a notch (vs. two weeks ago) with God Friended Me (0.6) but even with NCIS: Los Angeles (0.7) and Madam Secretary (0.4). The CW's Batwoman hung at 0.3 but Supergirl inched down to 0.2. NBC had a big night with the Cowboys in primetime on Sunday Night Football, with the prelims up roughly 50% week-to-week.

Renewology Week 4: Evil Rising and Nervous Nancy

Here's a look at the big Renewology developments in week four.

Spotted Ratings, Thursday 10/17/19

FINALS UPDATE: Young Sheldon (1.0), Thursday Night Football (4.2, +1.3) and Legacies (0.3) adjusted up while How to Get Away with Murder (0.4) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Numbers to come.

Thursday, October 17, 2019

Spotted Ratings, Wednesday 10/16/19

FINALS UPDATE: Chicago Med (1.5) and The Masked Singer (2.2) adjusted up while SEAL Team (0.6), Chicago PD (1.3) and Almost Family (0.6) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • A crossover event lifted NBC's Chicago lineup in a huge way, with Chicago Fire (1.3), Chicago Med (1.4) and Chicago PD (1.4) all notching new season highs by multiple tenths. These will likely be new series highs for all three shows in Plus.
  • With the baseball playoffs rained out, there was some upward momentum elsewhere on the big four as well. Survivor (1.4) hit a new season high, but the momentum did not really continue with dramas SEAL Team (0.7) and S.W.A.T. (0.5). Fox also had an unscripted uptick with The Masked Singer (2.1), but its lead-out Almost Family (0.7) won't even have to wait till finals to get its 0.7 this time. And ABC was up a notch with comedies Schooled (0.8) and Modern Family (1.0) and even with everything else.
  • The CW's saw post-premiere dips from Riverdale (0.2) and Nancy Drew (0.2), a particularly striking drop for Riverdale since it was at a 0.42 last week.

Wednesday, October 16, 2019

Spotted Ratings, Tuesday 10/15/19

FINALS UPDATE: Mixed-ish (0.6) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • There were some comedy downticks for ABC's The Conners (1.1), Bless This Mess (0.7) and Black-ish (0.6), and the first two hours on NBC (1.3/1.5/0.8) were also down. CBS (1.1/0.9/0.7) and Fox (0.7/0.8) were steady (and up a notch in FBI's case).
  • The CW's The Flash (0.5) lost a tenth from last week's premiere and led into the return of Arrow (0.3) for its final season at 9/8c.

Spotted Ratings, Monday 10/14/19

FINALS UPDATE: Dancing with the Stars (0.9, -0.2) and The Good Doctor (0.8, -0.2) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • ABC's Dancing with the Stars (1.1/1.0) and The Good Doctor (1.0) and Fox's 9-1-1 (1.4) and Prodigal Son (0.8) are pending preemptions due to Monday Night Football. But it's clear 9-1-1 could not sustain its huge upper-1's level from the three-episode event to start the season.
  • CBS was steady with The Neighborhood (0.8), Bob Hearts Abishola (0.7), All Rise (0.6) and Bull (0.6), while NBC was down another notch with The Voice (1.4) and Bluff City Law (0.5). And the CW's All American (0.2) and Black Lightning (0.2) couldn't hold onto their 0.3 season premieres.

Monday, October 14, 2019

Spotted Ratings, Sunday 10/13/19

FINALS UPDATE: Kids Say the Darndest Things (0.8), NFL Overrun (6.0, +0.5), Football Night in America p2 (2.2) and Sunday Night Football (4.6, +0.7) adjusted up while Shark Tank (0.6) and Football Night in America p3 (3.0, -0.5) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Week two for the CW Sunday saw sizable drops in both hours, with Batwoman falling two tenths to 0.3 (albeit a high one with a 0.3 -> 0.4 breakdown) and Supergirl falling to a lower 0.3 (with a 0.3 -> 0.2 breakdown).
  • The other premiere from last week, ABC's Kids Say the Darndest Things (0.7), was also down two tenths in its second week. But the night as a whole still looks OK for ABC, as America's Funniest Home Videos (0.7) was up a notch and Shark Tank (0.7) and The Rookie (0.6) were even.
  • CBS had the national NFL lead-in for 60 Minutes (2.1), God Friended Me (1.0/0.9), NCIS: Los Angeles (0.8/0.7) and Madam Secretary (0.5). There shouldn't be a ton of adjustment since the lineup started on time on the East Coast. Fox lost that lead-in and was down a tenth vs. two weeks ago with The Simpsons (0.8) and Bless the Harts (0.6), but even with Bob's Burgers (0.7) and Family Guy (0.7). NBC had a relatively weak Sunday Night Football (4.2/4.1/3.4).

Renewology Week 3: The CW's Premiere Week, and the Newbie Mean Reversion

Here's a look at the big Renewology developments in week three.

Saturday, October 12, 2019

Spotted Ratings, Friday 10/11/19

FINALS UPDATE: Blue Bloods (0.6) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Fox's WWE SmackDown! (1.0/0.9) remained comfortably on top of broadcast, and still well ahead of what it was doing on USA Network, but took a large week two drop vs. last week's 1.4.
  • It was another rough week on ABC, as American Housewife stayed at 0.5 while Fresh Off the Boat (0.3) and 20/20 (0.3/0.4) both fell. But the other broadcasters were even to up, with CBS' Hawaii Five-0 (0.7) and Magnum P.I. (0.6) steady while Blue Bloods upticked to a new season high 0.7. NBC was flat with The Blacklist (0.5) and up with Dateline (0.6).
  • The CW finished its opening week with Charmed preliminarily hanging onto 0.2 on its new night, while Dynasty posted a familiar 0.1 at 9/8c.

FINALS UPDATE: Survivor (1.2) and S.W.A.T. (0.6) adjusted up while SEAL Team (0.6) and Almost Family (0.7) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • The CW's second newbie premiere of the year was Nancy Drew (0.3), down a tenth from its Riverdale lead-in (0.4). That may not seem like much, but it was a tenth bigger than last year's All American premiere in this timeslot. As for Riverdale, it was down a tenth from last year's premiere, and bounced back from a rough spring that saw a string of 0.2's and ended with a 0.3.
  • NBC was steady to up with One Chicago (1.1/1.2/1.0), including a new season high for Fire at 9/8c, while Fox was even with The Masked Singer (2.0) and will hope that Almost Family (0.8) can hold in finals this time after adjusting down to 0.7 last week.
  • The other two networks were not so steady; ABC was even with The Goldbergs (1.0) but down with Schooled (0.7), Modern Family (0.9) and Stumptown (0.6). CBS' Survivor (1.1) and SWAT (0.5) were also down.

FINALS UPDATE: The Conners (1.2) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Week three for ABC saw The Conners back at a preliminary 1.1 (last week it adjusted up to a 1.2 final) while Bless This Mess preliminarily inched up to 0.8. Mixed-ish (0.7) and Black-ish (0.7) were even while Emergence took a rough drop to 0.5 (following a very high 0.6 last week).
  • Some of the early season heat wore off for NCIS (1.1), down two tenths along with its lead-out FBI (0.8). NBC's The Voice (1.5) and This Is Us (1.6) were each down a tenth, while Empire (0.8) also lost another tenth in week three.
  • The CW brought back The Flash (0.6), down two tenths from last year's premiere and tying last week's finale. It led into an encore of the Batwoman pilot (0.3).

FINALS UPDATE: 9-1-1 (1.7) adjusted up while Bluff City Law (0.6) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • The CW moved sophomore drama All American (0.3) to Monday at 8/7c, where it preliminarily got a boost after ending its first season on ten straight 0.2's. (It also had a preliminary 0.3 in A18-34, a major improvement after ending with five straight 0.1's last year.) At 9/8c, Black Lightning also returned to a preliminary 0.3, down a tenth from last year's premiere but up from three straight 0.2's to end last season.
  • Fox's 9-1-1 ended its three-part event with a third straight 1.6, but Prodigal Son (0.9) fell a tick at 9/8c.
  • CBS' The Neighborhood (0.8) fell a notch but Bob Hearts Abishola (0.7), All Rise (0.6) and Bull (0.6) matched last week. ABC was steady with Dancing with the Stars (0.8) and The Good Doctor (0.9). NBC was also even-ish with The Voice (1.5/1.6) and Bluff City Law (0.7) but could suffer in finals due to a football preemption.

FINALS UPDATE: Sunday Night Football (5.6, +0.6) and NFL Overrun (7.2, +1.0) adjusted up while 60 Minutes (0.8), Football Night in America p2 (0.5, -1.1), Football Night in America p3 (2.0, -2.2), The Simpsons (2.1, -0.5), Bless the Harts (1.2) and Bob's Burgers (1.0) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • The CW began its new season on a positive note with the series premiere of Batwoman (0.5) at 8/7c, certainly the CW's most impressive newbie premiere since at least Black Lightning (a 0.8 after The Flash in early 2018). It also helped Supergirl (0.4) in its move to 9/8c, as that show was up a notch from its spring 8/7c level.
  • ABC had its own nice 8/7c premiere with its reboot of Kids Say the Darndest Things (0.9), outrating the year-ago Dancing with the Stars: Juniors premiere by two tenths. Shark Tank (0.7) was even at 9/8c while The Rookie (0.6) edged down.
  • The national NFL lead-in switched over to Fox, which rode a late-afternoon Cowboys game to a huge animation boost for The Simpsons (2.6), Bless the Harts (1.3), Bob's Burgers (1.1) and Family Guy (0.9). The lineup started a few minutes late on the East Coast so there could be a little downward adjustment.
  • CBS dropped modestly without the national NFL lead-in as God Friended Me (0.7) and NCIS: Los Angeles (0.7) started at their regular times, but there was no interest in the return of Madam Secretary (0.4) at 10/9c. NBC's Sunday Night Football (5.2/5.3/4.7) was down quite a bit from last week.

Renewology Week 2: Stumptown and Prodigal Son Become Renewal Favorites

Here's a look at the big Renewology developments in week two.

Saturday, October 5, 2019

Spotted Ratings, Friday 10/4/19

FINALS UPDATE: No adjustments.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • For the second straight year, Fox provided the breakout Friday night moment of the season. This time, it was its acquisition of the WWE's SmackDown (1.4/1.3), which roughly doubled the ratings it has been pulling on USA in recent weeks.
  • It was a rough week two for ABC as American Housewife (0.5) fell two tenths from last week's premiere, while Fresh Off the Boat (0.4) and 20/20 (0.4/0.5) were also down. The CBS lineup of Hawaii Five-0 (0.7), Magnum P.I. (0.6) and Blue Bloods (0.6) was even.
  • NBC's The Blacklist (0.5) returned at 8/7c at the low end of its ratings from last season, tying the year-ago Blindspot premiere in the timeslot.

Friday, October 4, 2019

Spotted Ratings, Thursday 10/3/19

FINALS UPDATE: Thursday Night Football (4.4, +0.7) adjusted up while A Million Little Things (0.8) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Things didn't get any worse for the CBS comedy lineup in week two, with Young Sheldon (1.0) matching last week's prelims (it later adjusted up to 1.1) while The Unicorn (0.8), Mom (0.8), Carol's Second Act (0.7) and drama newbie Evil (0.6) all matched last week's finals.
  • On NBC, the 8/7c hour of Superstore (0.8) and Perfect Harmony (0.5) was even, but The Good Place (0.6) fell and, remarkably, so it did its already DOA lead-out Sunnyside (0.3). At 10/9c Law and Order: SVU managed to pull its way up to a 0.7 once again, beating its drama competition.
  • ABC Thursday was down across the board with Grey's Anatomy (1.3) losing two tenths and A Million Little Things (0.9) and How to Get Away with Murder (0.5) each down one.
  • And Fox's Thursday Night Football (3.7) was actually just a couple tenths below last week's huge prelim; we'll see if it can catch up in finals since the game featured West Coast markets.

Spotted Ratings, Wednesday 10/2/19

FINALS UPDATE: Chicago Med (1.1) and The Masked Singer (2.0) adjusted up while Single Parents (0.7) and Almost Family (0.7) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Fox unveiled its first scripted lead-out to The Masked Singer (1.9), but new drama Almost Family (0.8) was pretty soundly rejected by that show's audience.
  • CBS featured the returns of third-year dramas SEAL Team (0.7) and S.W.A.T. (0.6). SEAL was off a tenth from the year-ago premiere, while S.W.A.T. was down a tenth from Criminal Minds in this timeslot a year ago. At 8/7c, Survivor (1.2) inched down from last week's premiere.
  • The second Wednesday was much steadier than the second Tuesday on ABC, as the comedies (1.0/0.8/1.1/0.8) were even (and up a tenth in Single Parents' case), while week two of Stumptown followed up last week's crazy DVR growth by maintaining its 0.7.
  • One Chicago was also close to even in week two, as Chicago PD (1.0) shed a tenth but Chicago Med (1.0) and Chicago Fire (1.1) were even.

The 2019-20 Climate Center: League Averages

The Climate Center helps you keep up with some of this site's bigger-picture numbers on a week-to-week basis. Though most of the A18-49+ posts aren't updated until the summer, this can keep you posted on how things are developing while the season is ongoing.

The League Averages post covers the numbers that really make A18-49+ go: the 'league average,' which is an average of all ratings for original non-sports series on the big four networks during the traditional 35- or 36-week regular season. No sports, no reruns, no specials, no movies, no sustaining programming included!

The 2019-20 Climate Center: Networks

The Climate Center helps you keep up with some of this site's bigger-picture numbers on a week-to-week basis. Though most of the A18-49+ posts aren't updated until the summer, this can keep you posted on how things are developing while the season is ongoing.

The Networks post looks at some of the metrics that best get at the networks' actual strength, most importantly breaking the networks' overall averages apart by category and mostly focusing on only the original non-sports series.

The 2019-20 Climate Center: Renewology Targets

Ever wonder how Renewology comes up with its percentages? A key part is the network-specific target averages; the R% is all about how close a show is to its target average. This Climate Center post will illustrate the steps that go into creating those targets, within each network and category.

The first table is simply a week-to-week list of all the network/category targets, so you can see easily how they've evolved over the course of the season. Then there's a more in-depth look at the components of the target on each network. At the bottom of these tables is a brief description of what these numbers are. For more on why they're actually used in Renewology, please see the summary of the Renewology process. (The stuff about target averages is under Step Three.)

FINALS UPDATE: The Conners (1.2) and The Voice (1.6) adjusted up while New Amsterdam (0.8) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Week two brought a two-tenth drop for most of the ABC Tuesday lineup, including newbies Mixed-ish (0.7) and Emergence (0.6) but also returnees The Conners (1.1) and Black-ish (0.7). Only Bless This Mess (0.7) was able to stay within a tenth of last week.
  • The other networks held up better, including just a one-tenth decline for the leading NBC lineup of The Voice (1.5), This Is Us (1.7) and New Amsterdam (0.9). That'll make the y2y situation look a little less dire for This Is Us, which fell six tenths in the year-ago week two.
  • Fox was also down a notch with The Resident (0.7) and Empire (0.9). CBS' FBI (1.0) was the lone riser of the night, surrounded by a steady NCIS mothership (1.3) and NCIS: New Orleans (0.7).

Spotted Ratings, Monday 9/30/19

FINALS UPDATE: Whose Line Is It Anyway? (R) (0.2) adjusted up while Dancing with the Stars (0.8), The Good Doctor (0.9), The Voice (1.5) and Bluff City Law (0.7) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • After a rough Premiere Monday, Fox's Prodigal Son (1.0) and NBC's Bluff City Law (0.8) managed to hold steady in the week two prelims, while their respective lead-ins 9-1-1 (1.6) and The Voice (1.5/1.6) were even or slightly down.
  • But the most promising start from last week also took the biggest drop, as Bob Hearts Abishola (0.7) dropped two tenths and went well behind its steady The Neighborhood (0.9) lead-in. The CBS dramas All Rise (0.6) and Bull (0.6) were also on the downturn.
  • Preliminarily, ABC was also even-ish with Dancing with the Stars (0.9/0.8) and The Good Doctor (1.0).

Spotted Ratings, Sunday 9/29/19

FINALS UPDATE: NFL Overrun (5.8, +1.8), 60 Minutes (1.8, +0.4), NCIS: Los Angeles (0.8, +0.2) and Sunday Night Football (7.8, +1.1) adjusted up while Football Night in America p2 (1.4, -1.3), Football Night in America p3 (3.9, -1.9), The Simpsons (R) (0.5, -0.5) and Bob's Burgers (R) (0.7, -0.2) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Fox featured the return of The Simpsons (0.9) leading into animated newbie Bless the Harts (0.7) and the timeslot premieres of Bob's Burgers (0.7) at 9/8c and Family Guy (0.7) at 9:30. It's a big year-to-year drop for the lineup, though it can blame not getting nearly as much help from local NFL overruns. (The network had a preliminary 1.8 in the 7:00 hour last year and only a 1.0ish this year.) Harts was down a tenth from the year-ago Rel episode (it had a 0.8 at 9:30 after a 1.2 Family Guy).
  •  ABC had some good Sunday news with a big bounce for the Celebrity Family Feud (1.0) season finale, leading into the return of Shark Tank (0.7) and sophomore drama The Rookie (0.7) at 10/9c. Shark Tank basically had the raw numbers it produced at 9/8c in the fall last year (and was up from the year-ago season premiere at 10/9c), while The Rookie managed to bring all of its late-season Tuesday demo to its new night.
  • CBS primetime started at 7:46 on the East Coast but the hourly prelims for 60 Minutes (1.4), God Friended Me (0.9) and NCIS: Los Angeles (0.6) are starting at 8:00. That means these shows should be adjusting up if anything. NBC had a massive night with the Cowboys on Sunday Night Football (6.8/7.0/6.5); the prelim ratings are up double-digits from the year-ago Premiere Sunday.
