FINALS UPDATE: The Big Bang Theory (R)
(0.9) adjusted up.
WHAT MATTERS:- Following a Queen/Adam Lambert special (0.8), which was a tenth below last week's American Idol clip show, ABC's The Fix dropped to its first 0.4.
- Now airing after a The Big Bang Theory repeat (0.8), Man with a Plan (0.8) managed an uptick, but The Code fell back to 0.5 at 9/8c.
- NBC was even-ish with The Voice (1.2/1.1) and The Enemy Within (0.6). Fox's 9-1-1 (1.1) passed a tenth over to The Resident (0.9). The CW's Legends of Tomorrow preliminarily got back up to 0.3.
FINALS UPDATE: American Idol (1.6, +0.2) and
The Simpsons (0.8) adjusted up while
The Red Line (0.4) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- CBS got a very poor two-hour start from limited series The Red Line (0.5/0.4), which couldn't even get to God Friended Me series low levels on its series premiere night. Buried at 10/9c after Red Line, NCIS: Los Angeles fell to its first ever 0.6.
- But it was a positive night especially on the rest of the big three, as American Idol (1.5/1.4) continued on another late April upswing and NBC's World of Dance (0.8) and Good Girls (0.6) were also up.
- The Simpsons (0.7) and Bob's Burgers (0.8) were even in their returns from a couple weeks off, while Family Guy (0.8) ticked down in its first head-to-head with Game of Thrones. The CW dramas (0.3/0.2) were even.
Here's a look at the big Renewology developments in week 31.
FINALS UPDATE: Dynasty (0.1) adjusted down.
FINALS UPDATE: The Big Bang Theory (1.8) adjusted up while
NFL Draft (1.1) and
Mom (1.0) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- The broadcast home for the NFL Draft (1.2) changed to ABC, where it was preliminarily up a tenth year-to-year from last year's Fox rating for round one.
- As usual, the Draft was mostly damaging to the broadcast entertainment options; The Big Bang Theory (1.7) was down from last week, as was Young Sheldon (1.4) in its return from a couple weeks off. But the bigger lead-in helped Mom (1.1) at 9/8c, while Life in Pieces (0.8) matched last week's 9:30 episode. S.W.A.T. was down a notch at 10/9c.
- NBC also saw real carnage, with Superstore (0.7) down two tenths and A.P. Bio (0.4) and Abby's (0.3) both somehow finding even lower lows (sandwiching an even Brooklyn Nine-Nine (0.5)). Law and Order: SVU (0.7) somehow managed to be even at 10/9c.
- It was finale night on Fox, with Gotham (0.5) actually dropping for its series finale. But The Orville (0.7) headed into decision time on a hopeful note, posting its highest rating in the last five episodes. The CW (0.3/0.2) was even.
FINALS UPDATE: Survivor (1.5) adjusted up while
Riverdale (0.2) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- NBC's Chicago trio (1.0/1.1/1.0) was back from a couple weeks off, and all three shows matched three weeks ago.
- Against NBC's return, CBS dropped with both Survivor (1.4) and The Amazing Race (1.0), while ABC's Whiskey Cavalier fell to its first 0.4 after another round of comedy repeats (0.6/0.5/0.5/0.4).
- On Fox, Empire (1.1) and Star (0.9) were even, while the CW's Riverdale (0.3) had the only uptick of the night.
FINALS UPDATE: MasterChef Junior (0.8) and
The Flash (0.6) adjusted up.
WHAT MATTERS:- NBC flipped The Village (0.6) to 8/7c, while The Voice results show (0.9) went to 9/8c. This didn't change The Village and brought Voice down by another tenth, but NBC netted a win since it got New Amsterdam (0.8) to rise by two tenths at 10/9c.
- On ABC, Bless This Mess (0.7) dropped a couple tenths in week two, tying Black-ish (0.7) in the demo but still building from it by about 10% in total viewers. At 10/9c, new documentary series 1969 (0.4) was a big downgrade on previous occupant The Rookie. The night led off with steady American Housewife (0.8) and a Bless This Mess pilot encore (0.6).
- CBS snuck in some pre-sweeps repeats (0.7/0.6) and an original NCIS: New Orleans (0.6), Fox's unscripted (0.7/0.5) was even yet again, and the CW at least preliminarily got back to 0.3 for the season-maybe-series finale of Roswell, New Mexico.
FINALS UPDATE: Bull (R)
(0.4) and
Legends of Tomorrow (0.2) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- American Idol (0.9) finished its Monday run with a clip show, and The Fix held onto a 0.5 at 10/9c. Despite weaker ABC competition, NBC's The Voice (1.2) could not benefit, and The Enemy Within was stuck at 0.6 for a third straight week.
- CBS finished out season one of The Neighborhood (1.0), and it was steady but its lead-out Man with a Plan (0.7) took a dip. The Code preliminarily rallied to a 0.6 at 9/8c, and 9-1-1 (1.2) was also up on Fox. The Resident (0.8) and the CW's superhero duo (0.3/0.2) were even.
FINALS UPDATE: American Idol (1.3) adjusted up.
WHAT MATTERS:- ABC's American Idol (1.2) sought another late April surge with Disney Night. Since it was live in all time zones, it should get more of a boost in finals than the season has so far. Shark Tank (0.8) was even at 10/9c.
- NBC's World of Dance (0.7) matched last week, while Good Girls ticked back down to 0.5. CBS populated the 8:00-10:00 block with an old-skewing Motown special (0.6), leading into the Madam Secretary season finale (0.4). Supergirl (0.3) and Charmed (0.2) were even in their returns from a couple weeks off.
Here's a look at the big Renewology developments in week 30.
FINALS UPDATE: NBA Playoffs (0.8) and
Last Man Standing (0.9) adjusted up while
Whose Line Is It Anyway? (R)
(0.2) adjusted down.
FINALS UPDATE: Grey's Anatomy (1.3) and
The Big Bang Theory (1.9) adjusted up while
Station 19 (0.8) and
Supernatural (0.3) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- Numbers to come. CBS veteran Life in Pieces returned with new episodes at 8:30 and 9:30.
FINALS UPDATE: Modern Family (R)
(0.5) and
Single Parents (R)
(0.4) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- The Amazing Race (1.2) made a late-spring return on CBS. It was down from the show's breakout return in early winter 2018 (1.6), but still toward the high end of the show's premieres historically. (The 2017 premiere, in a relatively similar time of year, pulled a 0.9 on a Thursday at 10/9c.) Survivor (1.5) was even and SEAL Team (0.7) picked up a tenth with the upgraded lead-in.
- ABC's Whiskey Cavalier fell back to 0.5 following comedy repeats (0.7/0.6/0.6/0.5), while Fox's dramas (1.1/0.9) were even. The CW's Riverdale returned from hiatus with its first ever 0.2.
FINALS UPDATE: The Kids Are Alright (0.6),
The Flash (0.5) and
Roswell, New Mexico (0.2) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- ABC added sitcom Bless This Mess (0.9) to its Tuesday lineup at 9:30. It was the network's highest-rated show on a night in which everything else was up as well; American Housewife (0.8), The Kids Are Alright (0.7), Black-ish (0.8) and the 10/9c finale of The Rookie (0.7) all picked up a tenth from last week. BTM tied previous occupant Splitting Up Together's highest rating of the season (from all the way back in October), while Black-ish had its first 0.8 in almost two months.
- Things got even uglier on NBC, down across the board with The Voice (1.0), The Village (0.6) and New Amsterdam (0.6).
- CBS' NCIS (1.1) inched down, but the return of FBI (0.9) at 9/8c helped NCIS: New Orleans (0.7) to rebound at 10/9c. Fox (0.7/0.5) was even and the CW was up with The Flash (0.6) and Roswell, New Mexico (0.3).
FINALS UPDATE: Man with a Plan (0.9) and
The Resident (0.8) adjusted up while
The Code (0.5) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- In the first episode in its regular Monday timeslot, The Code (0.6) was down a tenth from its Tuesday preview. The CBS comedies (1.0/0.8) and Bull (0.6) matched two weeks ago.
- It was a rough return from a week off for The Resident (0.7) and 9-1-1 (1.1), both plummeting to new lows and down two tenths from two weeks ago.
- NBC's The Voice (1.3) got a little rebound from last week against the basketball game, but The Enemy Within was still mired at 0.6. ABC was even-ish with American Idol (1.2/1.1) and The Fix (0.5). The CW featured the return of Arrow (0.2), now at 9/8c after Legends of Tomorrow (0.3).
FINALS UPDATE: No adjustments.
WHAT MATTERS:- Though CBS got its dream Masters winner in Tiger Woods, it ended up with no primetime boost from the event, since the prospect of late-afternoon weather saw the conclusion moved to hours earlier in the afternoon. So the season finale of God Friended Me (0.6) along with NCIS: Los Angeles (0.7) and Madam Secretary (0.4) all tied their season lows.
- ABC's American Idol (1.3/1.2) and NBC's World of Dance (0.7/0.8) were both on the rebound, apparently having more trouble with last week's ACM Awards than with this week's Game of Thrones premiere. 10/9c occupants Shark Tank (0.8) and Good Girls (0.6) were even. Fox and the CW were in repeat mode against Thrones.
Here's a look at the big Renewology developments in week 29.
FINALS UPDATE: Blindspot (0.4),
Whose Line Is It Anyway? (R)
(0.1, -0.2) and
Penn and Teller: Fool Us (R)
(0.2) adjusted down.
Killing Eve
Sundays, 8/7c, AMC
FINALS UPDATE: Gotham (R)
(0.3) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- NBC's Brooklyn Nine-Nine (0.6) returned to the mix at 9/8c, where it was a tick below last week's Will and Grace and helped Abby's to its first 0.4 at 9:30. Law and Order: SVU (0.7) also ticked down at 10/9c, though Superstore (0.9) led off the NBC evening with an uptick.
- CBS' Fam (0.8) inched up for its season/series finale, leading out of the last repeat Thursday for the Sheldon-verse (1.0/1.0/0.9) before TBBT's series finale in mid-May.
- Fox's The Orville (0.6) returned from hiatus leading out of a Gotham repeat (0.4). Week two of In the Dark hung at 0.2, leading out of an upticking Supernatural (0.4). And the ABC dramas (1.5/0.9/0.5) were all even.
FINALS UPDATE: Schooled (1.0) adjusted up while
NCIS (R)
(0.5) and
Chicago Med (R)
(0.5) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- With Million Dollar Mile gone from the schedule, an older-skewing NCIS repeat (0.6) did worse at 9/8c and failed to boost SEAL Team (0.6) at 10/9c. Survivor (1.5) easily led the night again.
- ABC got a few comedy upticks from Schooled (0.9), Modern Family (1.2) and Single Parents (0.8), and Fox's Empire (1.1) and Star (0.9) gave back last week's upticks, and NBC's Chicago shows were in repeats.
FINALS UPDATE: NCIS (1.2) adjusted up while
Mental Samurai (0.5) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- CBS had a weak preview for new drama The Code (0.7) at 9/8c, not even coming close to a typical episode of FBI in the hour. Next week, Code heads to the Monday 9/8c hour vacated by Magnum P.I. Its lead-in NCIS (1.1) was even, but NCIS: New Orleans (0.6) fell to a new low at 10/9c.
- NBC shook things up with the Tuesday return of The Voice (1.2) leading into the first 9/8c episode of The Village (0.7). It couldn't improve upon its last couple airings after This Is Us, and worse yet it helped tank the return of New Amsterdam (0.7) at 10/9c; it went three tenths below the 1.0 it's pulled for every previous 2019 episode.
- ABC's bookends American Housewife (0.7) and The Rookie (0.6) both inched down, while The Kids Are Alright (0.6), Black-ish (0.7) and Splitting Up Together (0.6) were even. Fox's unscripted (0.7/0.6) was even again, and Roswell, New Mexico returned to 0.2 after a repeat lead-in.
FINALS UPDATE: NCAA Championship (5.3, +0.9) adjusted up while
The Big Bang Theory (R)
(0.9, -0.9) and
NCAA Championship Pregame (1.7, -0.3) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- CBS got back the NCAA basketball title game (4.4) after it aired on TBS last year. It'll crush last year's TBS average (4.09), but the prelim is about 20% below the last CBS game two years ago, which averaged a 5.6 prelim and adjusted up to a 7.1.
- Opposite the big game, it was a miserable night on NBC, as The Voice (1.3/1.2) and The Enemy Within (0.6) both got demolished. ABC held much closer to last week with American Idol (1.1/1.0) and The Fix (0.5). The CW's Legends of Tomorrow was back at a preliminary 0.3 (last week it adjusted down to 0.2).
FINALS UPDATE: The Simpsons (R)
(0.4) adjusted up while
Ellen's Game of Games (R)
(0.4) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- CBS joined the music-themed programming fray on Sunday with the Academy of Country Music Awards (1.6), which appear to have taken a step backward after three relatively steady years in the low-2's.
- But they were still potent enough to take a couple tenths out of American Idol (1.0) and a tenth out of both preliminary hours of World of Dance (0.6/0.7). The 10:00 shows held up better as Shark Tank (0.8) was down a tenth (but barely eked out a 0.9 last week) and Good Girls managed to pull off another 0.6. Fox was also down a notch with The Simpsons (0.7) and Bob's Burgers (0.8).
Here's a look at the big Renewology developments in week 28.
FINALS UPDATE: Blindspot (0.4),
The Blacklist (0.5),
Dateline (0.5) and
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (0.1) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- The CBS dramas returned from basketball hiatus with Hawaii Five-0 (0.8) and Blue Bloods (0.8) both on the rise. Quite a few other shows were up as well, including the ABC comedies (0.6/0.5) and Fox's The Cool Kids (0.7), along with NBC's Blindspot (0.5) and Dateline (0.6).
- And the CW bade farewell to Crazy Ex-Girlfriend with the series finale managing a 0.2 in the 8:00 hour (the show's first 0.2 since January). A 9/8c CEG special fell to 0.1.
FINALS UPDATE: The Big Bang Theory (2.0) and
Young Sheldon (1.5) adjusted up while
For the People (0.5) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- Numbers to come. New drama In the Dark debuted on the CW.
FINALS UPDATE: Single Parents (0.7) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- ABC's comedies returned with Schooled falling to 0.8 between The Goldbergs (1.1) and Modern Family (1.1), while Single Parents (0.8) was actually up at 9:30. With the return of an original lead-in, Whiskey Cavalier (0.6) inched up as well.
- Week two of Million Dollar Mile (0.8) shed a tenth for CBS, as did its lead-in Survivor (1.5). The drama wars swung back a bit in Fox's direction, as Empire (1.2) and Star (1.0) were both up while Chicago Med (1.0), Chicago Fire (1.1) and Chicago PD (1.0) were all down. And with an encore (0.1) of last week's premiere as a lead-in, Jane the Virgin (0.2) dropped from last week.
FINALS UPDATE: Ellen's Game of Games (1.2) and
This Is Us (1.9) adjusted up while
The Village (0.7) and
Roswell, New Mexico (R)
(0.1) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- The third season finale of This Is Us (1.8) was up a tenth from last week, but down a full point from the season two finale. In its third and final airing alongside This Is Us before a move to 9/8c, The Village (0.8) tried to keep itself in the mix with a preliminary week three uptick (though it may be close to adjusting down in finals). The night began with a new low for the season finale of Ellen's Game of Games (1.1).
- CBS was down a tenth with NCIS (1.1), even with FBI (0.9) in its backdoor pilot for the Most Wanted spin-off and up a tenth with NCIS: New Orleans (0.8). ABC aired repeats of The Goldbergs (0.7) and Modern Family (0.6) in the 8/7c hour which didn't look too different from the usual original occupants. Later, Black-ish (0.7) was up a tenth while Splitting Up Together (0.6) and The Rookie (0.7) were steady. Fox's unscripted (0.7/0.6) was even.
FINALS UPDATE: Legends of Tomorrow (0.2) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- CBS was all original on season finale night for Magnum P.I. (0.7), with Magnum and lead-in comedies The Neighborhood (1.0) and Man with a Plan (0.8) all even. But Bull (0.6) returned to a new series low at 10/9c.
- ABC was down a tenth with American Idol (1.1) and The Fix (0.5), and NBC's The Voice (1.5) was also down a notch, but The Enemy Within held at 0.8. The night's only uptick came from 9-1-1 (1.3), leading out of an even The Resident (0.9).
- And the CW welcomed back DC's Legends of Tomorrow (0.3) for a run in the 8/7c hour, leading into a Penn and Teller: Fool Us special (0.2).
FINALS UPDATE: 60 Minutes (2.0, +0.4),
NCIS: Los Angeles (1.0),
Madam Secretary (0.6) and
Good Girls (0.6) adjusted up.
WHAT MATTERS:- CBS had an even bigger basketball lead-in on the second Sunday of March Madness, but it was over considerably earlier than last week; 60 Minutes (1.6), God Friended Me (1.1), NCIS: Los Angeles (0.9/0.8) and Madam Secretary (0.5) started just 17 minutes late. Because these prelims are acting as if they started at the bottom of the hour, the earlier programs should adjust up if anything.
- ABC's American Idol went three hours (1.3/1.2/1.1), outperforming the usual Shark Tank rating at 10/9c. NBC's Good Girls was back down to 0.5 following World of Dance (0.7/0.8), while Fox's The Simpsons (0.8) and Family Guy (0.9) along with the CW (0.3/0.2) were even.
Here's a look at the big Renewology developments in week 27.
