Cablemetrics: American Horror Story, Fear the Walking Dead, Outlander, The Deuce

WHAT MATTERS:

• FX's American Horror Story (2.02) returned to top the cable world on Tuesday, but the -27% was easily the show's steepest year-to-year decline for a premiere in series history. But it's a series that has been famous for its huge declines in the post-premiere weeks, so there is room to make up ground if it settles more smoothly this time.

• On Sunday, Fear the Walking Dead (0.78) was back with yet another two-hour episode and yet another new series low. Ugly year-to-year trends have been a recurring theme for FTWD all season, but this episode was less than half of the 1.62 at which it returned for the second half of its last season in August 2016.

• Both HBO and Starz traded out their Sunday crown jewels (Game of Thrones and Power, respectively) for much more modest performers as we approach the fall. On HBO, that meant new drama The Deuce (0.24). It fell at the low end of a long line of meh Sunday HBO drama premieres in the last year, including Big Little Lies (0.31) and The Young Pope (0.30) and The Night Of (0.26). (Though BLL and Night Of both had massive post-premiere growth.) The Deuce also fell well behind the Ballers (0.41) and Insecure (0.40) comedy duo that is still running in the 10:00 hour.
• Meanwhile, Starz had the third season premiere of Outlander (0.31), which eked out a win in the head-to-head against the other premium channels. It was down 21% from its last premiere in April 2016, when it was still airing on Saturday.
