Cablemetrics: The Magicians, Suits, Outsiders

These numbers are current through Monday, January 30.

WHAT MATTERS:

• Last week brought a rare moment of triumph for Syfy, as sophomore drama The Magicians returned at a new series high 0.52. This kind of number has been unheard of in recent years on the channel. The last time Syfy hit this raw number with a scripted series was back in fall 2014 by wrestling lead-out Z Nation, and I'm not sure how far back you'd have to go for a comparable A18-49+. (Looks like even early episodes of Warehouse 13 would not qualify.)

• The news was not so rosy for USA, as Suits returned with a mere 0.31 on the same Wednesday night, down a whooping 43% from the winter 2016 opener. It's already got another season secure beyond this one, but it was not a good start for what has been the network's most resilient scripted series.

• And as Salem said goodbye on WGN America with a mere 0.08 demo, the channel got back to higher-rated parts of its scripted slate with the return of sophomore Outsiders (0.27). It opened the season at 18% behind the year-ago series premiere.

• Not included here since it's not a weekly series, but BET made a massive splash last week with three-part miniseries The New Edition Story (1.93 -> 1.81 -> 1.93 on Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday). It may have been responsible for taking some African-American audience from other major draws, like The Haves and the Have Nots (which took a 23% week-to-week hit to 0.55).
