Cablemetrics: The Detour, Big Little Lies, Crashing, Bates Motel, Billions

These numbers are current through Tuesday, February 21.

WHAT MATTERS:

• TBS had big news on Tuesday from its sophomore comedy The Detour, which returned with a new series high 0.57 at 10:00 before dropping to 0.46 (still even with the second half of last year's premiere) at 10:30.

• The star-studded HBO miniseries Big Little Lies opened with a 0.31 same-day demo rating. That merely put it at the high end of recent modest HBO premieres like The Young Pope (0.30), Vinyl (0.25) and The Night Of (0.26, though again that number was not really indicative of what it did in future episodes). It led into a comedy hour of Girls (0.27), which has continued to trend well in its final season, and newbie Crashing (0.17).

• A&E brought back its flagship scripted series Bates Motel (0.51) for its final season on Monday. It was 23% behind last year's premiere but basically on par with its episodes in the second half of last season.

• And Showtime filled out its drama duo with the return of Billions (0.20), leading out of Homeland (0.33). Billions was within striking distance of the year-ago series premiere (0.24), which led out of a much stronger Shameless. But Billions heated up a lot after that point, so this still marked a new series low.

• In week two news, Legion (0.53) stayed near the top of the cable chart, but it was down 23% from last week. If it's any consolation, that still made it a better week two hold than Taboo, which hasn't gotten this high since its own premiere. And AMC's The Walking Dead (5.28) was down 8% from last week, putting it 20% behind last year's spring week two.
