Cablemetrics: Homeland, The Young Pope, Colony, Taboo

These numbers are current through Tuesday, January 17.

WHAT MATTERS:

• We talked about broadcast shows getting hurt by the last-minute NFL playoff game on Sunday, but Showtime is probably hoping that applied to Homeland (0.31) as well. If not, the show was down 45% year-to-year in the same-day ratings, which is probably not what the network was looking for out of the first episode of a three-season renewal.

• Homeland was still barely able to stave off HBO's premiere of The Young Pope, which was a hundredth behind at a 0.30. That's a pretty moderate number but it's actually better than recent HBO openers like Vinyl (0.25) and The Night Of (0.26, but became much stronger beyond the premiere).

• On Thursday, USA's genre drama Colony (0.29) returned for season two, 0.01 behind the season one low point and 34% behind last year's series premiere. It should probably be noted that it had a wrestling lead-in last year, so the y2y trends may not be quite as "Truly" severe as they appear.

• After a strong premiere, FX's Taboo (0.43) shed almost a third of its premiere rating in week two. FXX's It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (0.32) took a big (but fairly typical) week two drop of its own, as did Being Mary Jane (0.41) for BET. But Nashville (0.28) was steady in its second regular week on CMT. And on Freeform, it's been a rough post-premiere run for the newbie Beyond (0.14), which has now shed half of its week one demo since getting a very early renewal.
