WHAT MATTERS:
- With a lot of swimming and the women's gymnastics team finals, the opening Tuesday has been the high point of the last two Summer Olympics. And it could happen again this year, as the Games surged to a 9.9 rating in Tuesday's prelims and could break double digits after finals. The 9.9 would still be down a little over 20% from this night in 2012.
- The Games also had less broadcast competition, as ABC's Bachelor in Paradise dipped to 1.1 on its second night, while the return of post-show After Paradise (0.5) and 10/9c comedy repeats (0.3/0.3) were weak options later in the night.
- On CBS, Zoo (0.6) got its first dose of Olympic competition and fell to a new low, surrounded by NCIS franchise repeats (0.7/0.5). The CW's MADtv clung to another 0.3, now leading out of a The Flash repeat (0.3). And Fox began its late-summer Tuesday repeat lineup of Brooklyn Nine-Nine (0.4), New Girl (0.3) and Lucifer (0.3).
