Cablemetrics: Fear the Walking Dead, The Night Of, Power, Halt and Catch Fire

WHAT MATTERS:

• AMC's Fear the Walking Dead returned for the back half of season two with a 1.62 on Sunday. This was a double-digit step down from the show's previous series low (the 1.88 season 2A finale). It was barely half of the season two premiere (3.08) in April. And it was less than a third of the show's 4.93 series premiere, which was just one calendar year ago! But despite the increasingly negative trend, the show is still dominating the cable landscape rather easily. That's really just another testament to how incredibly far The Walking Dead mothership has separated from everything else in its space.

• Elsewhere on Sunday, it was another mostly positive week for cable shows as the NBC Olympics competition took another big step down. The one that really stood out again is HBO's The Night Of (0.69), where the miniseries' momentum seems increasingly real. This represented a big leap to a second consecutive new series high. The super-sized finale comes later this week, and it'll be interesting to see if it can pull off the same kind of bounce as True Detective season one (which was showing similar growth signs in the second half of its season).

• Other good news on Sunday included Starz' Power (0.96) and HBO's Ballers (0.64), which both rose to their second-best ratings of the season. (However, Ballers was outrated by its The Night Of lead-in for the first time.) And Power lead-out Survivor's Remorse (0.41) now seems back to pretty normal, two weeks after its crazy drop against the first Sunday of the Olympics.

• After Talking Dead (0.57) on Sunday, AMC previewed the acclaimed but low-rated drama Halt and Catch Fire (0.15) at 11/10c, going another 29% behind its year-ago Sunday premiere. Its regular slot will be on Tuesday (starting last night), which probably isn't good news for the ratings. Does it have much hope of staying ahead of the 0.10ish level we saw from Feed the Beast on Tuesdays earlier in the summer?
