Cablemetrics: The Magicians, American Dad!, Suits, Colony

WHAT MATTERS:

• Might newbie The Magicians finally be the Syfy drama to break through its recent sub-0.3 ceiling? The show had a nice start by Syfy standards, with a 0.39/0.41 for its two-hour opener on Monday. (The first half of that premiere previewed back in December with a 0.26, but I will count this Monday 9/8c airing as the "official" one since it was so much higher.)

• TBS brought back American Dad! (0.54), still at a small fraction of what it did in its broadcast days. It was 19% behind its previous season's opener, which was the first-ever TBS episode in October 2014 (0.67). Leading out was Angie Tribeca (0.28), with another telecast of the series premiere that did much worse than the same episode in the 25-hour marathon (0.44).

• Freeform launched its second drama night of the new year with considerably worse results than the first. The Fosters (0.43) was down a reasonable 19% from last year, but its lead-out Recovery Road (0.16) had a rather dire start. This was almost a third below where the docu-drama Becoming Us started in the summer (0.23), and that show only lasted a month at 9/8c before being demoted to 10:00!

• It was a nice week for USA Network's winter dramas, starting with a strong return from veteran tentpole Suits (0.54) on Wednesday. This was down just a hundredth from its last winter premiere.

• Then came a nice upswing for week three of Colony (0.46) on Thursday, leaping to a new series high. It was one of many January newbie premieres that had a strong week:
• The craziest was MTV's The Shannara Chronicles. After 20%ish drops in both weeks two and three, its fourth week (the first one not previously available online) saw a 58% surge to 0.49, vaulting all the way ahead of the 0.48 for the two-hour series premiere. It's still not the big male draw for MTV that appeared possible when it premiered. This week it had a 0.57 F18-49/0.40 M18-49, a more familiar MTV gender skew compared with a 0.45 F/0.51 M for that series premiere. But this was at least a promising sign for its connection with the network's base audience, and it built from Teen Wolf (0.44).
• Also on Tuesday, Shadowhunters (0.45) bounced back a bit after what seemed like a catastrophic week two drop. This provides it more hope of staying ahead of the likes of Stitchers on the Freeform totem pole.
• And on Showtime, Billions (0.27) was up a few hundredths in its second week, as was its lead-in Shameless (0.75). Though many broadcast originals sit out in this period, these dramas were a good counter-programming option against the NFC Championship game.
