WHAT MATTERS:
- It was a promising opening night as ABC Family made a channel name change to Freeform; first was the premiere of amazingly resilient Pretty Little Liars (1.06), which was actually up a tenth from its last winter premiere (presumably still riding the high from the huge 1.39 summer finale).
- That led into newbie Shadowhunters (0.76), which was one of the network's most impressive recent premieres. For comparison, summer 2014 lead-out Chasing Life and summer 2015 lead-out Stitchers each opened with a 0.53 out of 1.1ish PLL lead-ins.
- Also opening its series run this week was USA's alien invasion drama Colony (0.44), which didn't particularly spark compared to other recent USA openers. This was about on par with USA's summer launches of Mr. Robot (0.46) and Complications (0.41), and behind the Dig opener from a year ago (0.56).
- Showtime brought back Shameless (0.63), which edged out the Homeland premiere (0.56 in October) for Showtime's best of the season to date. The network held its drama newbie Billions until last night (a week later), which I'm assuming was to dodge the Golden Globes...? So its numbers will be out tomorrow.
- In week two news, The Shannara Chronicles (0.38) was down a tenth or 21% from last week's 0.48 opener. After corralling a nice male audience for the premiere, it skewed noticeably more toward the MTV/Teen Wolf crowd this time; it shed a third of the M18-49 audience (0.51 -> 0.34) but had a pretty tiny decline in females (0.45 -> 0.42).
- And after some major late-season declines, American Horror Story got a rather huge three-tenth finale jump to 1.15, topping this week's table. But even that bounce could only get the finale to -26% year-to-year.
