WHAT MATTERS:
- The week's biggest mover was the summer finale of Pretty Little Liars, which exploded from its normal 0.8ish level all the way to a whooping 1.39, the biggest rating for a scripted original since the True Detective premiere. It was the show's biggest same-day rating in almost two years, and in its six summer runs it's only had one rating bigger (a 1.40 on 8/27/13).
- HBO also wrapped its top summer show True Detective, which (at least for another couple weeks) still has the highest average on cable this summer. Though Detective got a 25% bounce to 1.21 for the finale, it was still by far the worst point on a year-to-year basis all season, since last season's finale zoomed all the way to 1.57. But it's definitely coming back if the creative forces are on board.
- In a cable summer where 1.0+ ratings are a rarity, you may not have noticed something else that got there this week: AMC's five-minute sneak peek of Fear the Walking Dead, which averaged 2.37 million viewers and a 1.1 rating on Sunday at 9:36 AM. Everyone who has a DVR season pass for The Walking Dead originals picked this thing up, and that's clearly where the viewership came from; the surrounding episodes in The Walking Dead marathon that morning averaged 0.3 and 0.4. So this is probably more about AMC taking advantage of the huge swath of people season passing TWD than any real indicator of interest in Fear the Walking Dead (though I'm sure FtWD will be just fine).
- ABC Family's comedy Kevin from Work had a slow start with a 0.24 at 8:00 and 0.14 at 8:30. It seems like the network must have overestimated the initial interest here to make it launch on its own and (in future weeks) occupy the top of the hour as a lead-in to Young and Hungry rather than the other way around.
