The Question, Sunday 1/4/15: Will Galavant Make Ratings Music?

The winter TV season really gets going tonight, a Sunday evening with no primetime NFL game but a lot of overall viewership due to the NFL playoff games in the late afternoon. Of greatest interest in the entertainment world is ABC's premiere of musical comedy "extravaganza" Galavant. It's certainly not the typical broadcast series, and it's gotten a solid amount of promotion through the holiday season. But ABC is double-pumping the full run across just four weeks in January, ending the show before February sweeps. Will Galavant make ratings music? That's The Question for Sunday, January 4, 2015.

Once Upon a Time This Season
3.5 (premiere, 9/28/14)
2.52 (fall average)
1.7 (finale, 12/14/14)

The first January of the year has often been ripe for a ratings surprise due to the external factors listed above. That and the unique concept may keep Galavant from going completely off the map out of the gate. (The next couple weeks against big event competition are another story.) However, ABC's scheduling of the series does not seem like a vote of confidence, and some of the target audience may just stick with the cartoons on Fox. So I'm pretty skeptical that this show can sniff at even the lowest Once numbers in the slot.

Over/Under: 1.45. (If the finals separate the 8:00 and 8:30 episodes, the over/under for the sum of the two will be 2.85.)

No entries accepted after 6:00am ET the morning after the date in the headline. If editing your pick, please leave a separate comment.

It really could go any way and not surprise me. Higher than 2 or lower than 1. Nothing would truly shock me. In any case, I believe this is really smart scheduling since it's a very low risk (there is no opportunity cost here, it would be either this or bachelor specials and it's just 4 weeks anyway, while the lead-out is also a dead show walking, no pun intended), but high reward (kind of concept that could blow everyone's expectations since it's so out there) kind of thing.

Winter is a very favorable time of the year for most programs and while the next two sundays will be horrible competition wise, tonight only has the better half of the coin (that is, high viewing but relatively low competition). So based on that, I am going with Over, but like I said, nothing would surprise me.

Over.

That's what I said in my comment above, exactly: it's a low risk, high reward scheduling move. Props to ABC, even if it fails.

Over. Please be Over.

No clue, but I will say Over at 1.6.

This is a tough line, my pick was either 1.4 or 1.5.

Going with the second one, so, over.

Only competition is a Simpsons overrun, but people well flee from football to non-fooball. Not to mention I have less to lose since most people bet "over".

Under. But I thought that Resurrection would bomb as well, and look how that turned out (at least initially). But this seems much worse than Resurrection.

Flopzilla. Under.

Even Selfie got a 1.6, but I could see it flopping HARD.

Let's be honest, the gap-programming show that ABC really wants to see hit is Agent Carter. Galavant is a very distant second. But the network is doing the best it can with the show: a premiere without any sports or awards shows to suck the oxygen out, the typical AFV lead-in instead of the myriad of weaker specials they've tried, a run that avoids the heaviest of hitters (the Super Bowl and Grammys), and a surprising amount of promotion. I fully recognize that this could wildly bomb out, but I like the idea of something so different on broadcast TV.

Over.

It'll premier lower than Selfie.

Over, but I really have no clue at all.

Just watched promo videos on YouTube and... WTF?! Let me change this to Under real quick. :S

It feels like 1.4 may not be low enough.

By the way, won't we get the best case worst case today before the ratings come out? We have a lot premiering! On the top of my mind, there's: Galavant, The Bachelor, Agent Carter, Celebrity Apprentice, Parks and Recreation, Masterchef Jr., American Idol, Empire, Backstorm, Glee and World's Funniest Fails.
