Spotted Ratings, Thursday 1/15/15

WHAT MATTERS:
  • The Big Bang Theory went back into repeats (2.5), but the rest of the CBS lineup didn't suffer too much. In particular, Mom (2.4) seems like a more impressive performer in these post-repeat airings than when TBBT is original. Two and a Half Men (2.1), The McCarthys (1.5) and Elementary (1.3) also took modest drops.
  • It wasn't a good second Thursday for American Idol (2.6), which took a big drop vs. the first three nights and saw the year-to-year gap widen compared to the opening Thursday (it was 24% behind 2014's second Thursday). This does not bode that well for next week's Backstrom launch.
  • NBC and ABC continued playing out their filler lineups; ABC's The Taste (0.9) was even, but NBC had week-to-week drops across the board, including from The Biggest Loser (1.1) and Parenthood (1.2).

I really think they should switch Mom and the scheduled Big Bang repeat around. I think it could be a Men-esque performer at 9.
It's kinda crazy that CBS is doing CW comedy scheduling of last summer. Anchor/comedy/Anchor repeat/comedy.

Spot said...

Meh, pretty boring night. Though I like seeing Mom doing pretty well. Imagine what would happen if The Millers was actually in that slot.

Spot said...

Yawn. But it's just the lull before the storm, there will be more action than on all other nights combined.
ABC lineup returns soon (and CW lineup too, but who cares), CBS reshuffles comedies in February, NBC launches completely new Thursday in early February, and next week Fox launches short living Backstrom. A month or so from now, only Elementary will air exactly as it did last night. Idol will be on Thursday, but it will shrink to 1 hour. And TBBT [R] / Mom will be there, but in 9 PM hour.

Mom's performance is the highlight of the night.

TGIT countdown: 2.

Spot said...

Lull before the storm is right.

1 week till Backstrom. 2 weeks till TGIT. 3 weeks till The Blacklist.

Greenblatt: "Hannibal" will be back in the summer, as possibly will "Heroes: Reborn" and "Aquarius."
He meant, at earliest.

Salke: "Chicago Med"-style spinoff is possible.
She probably meant one day, as it's probably too late for next season.

Also, NBC ordered 13 episodes straight to series of "Telenovela" starring Eva Longoria. It is actually called Telenovela, I don't know if it is a telenovela, but I'm pretty sure it must be some kind of soap.

Spot said...

Actually Telenovela's a singlecam comedy about a telenovela star. Also, there's plans for a miniseries on the Underground Railroad that will also be a Broadway production...k, as well as either Music Man or The Wiz Live, and TV movies produced
by Dolly Parton...yay.

Spot said...

Thanks.
Then "Telenovela" is basically "Episodes" rip-off, right?
And it's a half-hour on NBC, so..

Spot said...

Telenovela is Portuguese (assuming Spanish too) for soap opera.

A comedy about a soap opera. Oh boy. No way this can go wrong.

Black-ish was adjusted down to a1.9

Spot said...

The Mysteries of Laura was adjusted down to a 1.0 (bye!)
The Mentalist was adjusted up to a 1.4

Spot said...

Now people will start asking for knee-jerk reaction of moving Black-ish to Wed 8:30 PM. That would be very stupid move - it would cost them money to promote, plus it might confuse viewers of Goldbergs and Black-ish (= no gain in ratings). And then next fall... all over again when Empire moves to 8 PM, wasting money again on move promotion. They need to just weather it out.

8 PM dramas also adjusted.
Mentalist 1.4 - Laura 1.0
Memo to NBC execs: If you renew Laura, don't schedule it against CBS procedural, because even one of the lowest rated CBS procedurals is kicking its ass.

Spot said...

Empire will likely begin it's descent too so maybe Black-ish will gain some life back

Spot said...

NBC is hitting new lows, they are going from copying hits (Scandal of Affairs) to copy cult shows (Episodes + Jane the Virgin = Telenovela)

Spot said...

That Mom looks more impressive following TBBT rerun ratings compared against originals suggests that CBS has noticed the same and hopes it can replicate that in the 9:00 hour later this season. I still fear that the extended repeats will start to drag down the night a la Two and a Half Men's Sheen meltdown of 2011. But unless they want program the unaired episodes of The Millers, which of course would do worse, CBS doesn't really have a choice.

Spot said...

End Eva Longoria is draw almost as much as Matthew Perry, Michael J. Fox, or Bill Cosby? How can miss with this one then?

Spot said...

It's not really Episodes since that show's about adapting a show to America, and this is just the behind the scenes shiz during a soap opera production, but I don't get the pickup regardless. I understand NBC's going through a comedy identity crisis, but really? Everything about the log line screams "bomb". But then again, I'd say that to most comedy log lines nowadays, but NBC's almost a guarantee. But Greenblatt and Salke have said they're more interested in multicams, so this might not be of high priority...at least I hope not.

Spot said...

I stand corrected, Chicago Med *is* in contention for already next fall,
Now Deadline reports there will be backdoor pilot this spring as an episode of Chicago Fire.
I really don't understand why Greenblatt didn't announce it this morning at TCA. Bah, NBC.

http://deadline.com/2015/01/chicago-med-chicago-fire-planted-spinoff-medical-drama-1201352095/
A planted spinoff for the project is expected to air as an episode of mothership series Chicago Fire later this season

Spot said...

That makes NBC's move of the Night Shift even more questionable IMO. 2 medical dramas in the fall or even in the Spring seems like overkill to me.

Spot said...

So is Chicago Law and Chicago Cyber also in development?

Spot said...

Yes, it seems to be either-or situation. No sense to have them both.
I think bar is now set significantly higher for The Night Shift. But let's wait, for now Chicago Med is just a backdoor pilot But if it is picked, then I see nothing but a bleak future for TNS.

Spot said...

I don't care. Because there's only one Chicago show I'm interested in: Shameless.

Spot said...

Indeed, this sounds more like 30 Rock except "broad" (i.e. no jokes). Or, to be more obscure, it reminds me of a failed British show called Moving Wallpaper.

But, yes, it doesn't sound promising to me either.

Spot said...

Yes, you're right. While Episodes exhausted plotline of adapting
British show for U.S. market long time ago, two British authors being amazed
/ shocked / disgusted of L.A. lifestyle (or rather, how things are
done in Hollywood) is always running theme of the show.
Telenovela probably won't be about newcomers adapting to L.A. And it's going to be centered on star of the fictional show, not authors. Some workplace scenes surely will be similar to 30 Rock, Episodes, or whatever. But it simply can not be avoided, and me calling it rip-off for that reasin, is exaggerating, if not dumb.

@Eric McInnis & others, re Eva Longoria

I googled it a bit, and it turns out Longoria also was offered ABC pilot (single-camera from authors and producers of Trophy Wife). In a bidding war situation, and with regarding comedies NBC clearly being beggars, and ABC choosers, NBC offer to producers of Telenovela (Eva is one of producers) was: straight to series order if Longoria agrees to star in it, but only a pilot if she doesn't. It was enough of a carrot for production company. As for Longoria, she decided to return to TV anyway (unlike Heigl that has failing movie career, Eva has no movie career at all), it was just a question which of two offers she will accept.

NBC disastrous state of comedies
+ possibility ABC would snatch Longoria if they offer only a pilot
= they took a risk and ordered Telenovela straight to 13 episodes series

Spot said...

Alright. As long as Telenovela doesn't get the post-Voice slot, and this doesn't seem likely now, I"m fine with it.
