- FINALS UPDATE: While The 100 couldn't hold its 0.6, there was some very good news for the CDub: Arrow upticked to a new season high 1.1, putting it ahead of the year-ago episode. The blow to Chicago PD (1.4) was also softened somewhat, though it still marked a new season low.
- ABC took its lineup off for the always potent CMA Awards (4.5). It was pretty close to last year's 4.7 final.
- Despite the added ABC competition, most shows were close to even, including the return of Hell's Kitchen (1.3) and Red Band Society (0.9) after a World Series hiatus. The notable exceptions: CBS' crime dramas Criminal Minds (2.1) and Stalker (1.5) each dipped to new lows, and NBC's Chicago PD (1.3) had a real stinker of an outing on an otherwise steady NBC. The 100 posted a second straight preliminary uptick to 0.6 and will hope to hold onto this one in finals.

I'm guessing that they (the network and/or the producers) don't want to air something music-themed against The Voice, but ABC should consider the CMA Awards for Tuesdays in future years. I know airing against football is a non-starter so Sundays, Mondays, and Thursdays are out. And why throw something this highly-rated to the weekend? So of the two days left, ABC would see a bigger bounce to their average preempting their weaker night for CMA. Historically that's been Tuesdays.
Is it up for ABC to choose though? I never understood the deal with those award shows. Don't they simply get broadcasting rights or is it actually their show and they can choose those type of things?
I probably agree with you, I was just throwing it out there. I think in theory the voice is still their best bet to launch a comedy but at some point it has to be frustrating that they keep "wasting" that lead-in when they could be using it to prop up a drama and win Tuesdays comfortably without getting any rewards for it (read: viable comedies).
I am not really sure how to justify what's happening with all the rejection of these tuesday comedies though. Could it be that it was the individual failure of all 5 shows that have aired there? Maybe.. I defended for a long time that the CW's incapacity in finding a lead-out for TVD had to do with the shows themselves. If that's the case, either A) the comedies are just bad quality wise (with which I personally disagree especially concerning About a Boy but that's besides the point) or B) they are unfit with the voice audience. I will note for instance that FOX never managed to use American Idol to really launch a truly successful comedy while they did so with plenty of dramas. The one big hit comedy they eventually got (even if only for one season) was New Girl and that showed up on Tuesdays totally unrelated with Idol. Kind of ditto for when ABC tried comedies post DWTS. These are relevant comparions IMO.
If it A), then they probably should keep trying until they find the right show. However, if it is B), then they are certainly better off stop trying to waste a lead-in in fueling an audience that just isn't interested. Your guess is as good as mine here as to which is which but I certainly have a hard time imagining the voice audience anticipating a niche Tina Fey comedy like Kimmy Smith, which is probably what's going there in the spring anyway. But like I was saying, I don't feel confident enough that it's B to argue against this. At least not yet.
It was on Thursday 2 years ago. Anyways, it kinda had to be on Wednesdays this year. Sundays and Thursdays have serialized shows on a split schedule, Dancing isn't good for a random break, and Tuesdays would have had election coverage interrupting. Wednesday has no serial comedies and a marginally rated Nashville, so no real harm
I said it 6 months ago, and I certainly won't change my mind now that everything turned out to be just like I predicted. It's simply IDIOTIC to launch weak comedies out of The Voice.
Now they have weak Wednesday that is barely covering airing fee for those expensive airing fees. Even Thursday is currently definitely more profitable for NBC than Wednesday (Thursday costs like 40% less, while ratings are not 40% smaller than Wednesday ratings are). And they have comedies on Tuesday that are in red despite lead-in is NBC has?!? Those can lose many elsewhere, no need to waste good lead-in on it.
And correct order is Voice/Fire/PD. Because Fire is more female oriented out of two, and kinda soapy - that's why it's perfect Voice lead-out. While CPD is more of a 10 PM show, rough around the edges.
They move even Olympics (to not collide with NFL playoff or whatever). Then you have Winter Olympics in Canada with no snow. I repeat, in Canada.
Then I guess moving awards shows isn't much of a problem for entertainemnt corporations.
Yeah you are probably right, it was ignorance on my part. But then can fr instance ABC move the Oscars as it sees fit?
Perfect examples: the Oscars moved to early March this year to get away from airing against the Winter Olympics, and the Grammys aired two weeks early to dodge both the Olympics and the Super Bowl. And to back to the Oscars, the awards ceremony from Mondays to Sundays and from late-March/early-April to late-February in the past 15 and 10 years, respectively.
ABC may not have unilateral control but they can whisper that Tuesdays (or a different day) would be better or profitable for X reasons. That may be why the CMA Awards were on Thursdays two years ago: the network was about to launch Malibu Country and the CMA's would be the best platform to promote country's queen Reba.
I wasn't aware, thanks for the explanation!
Wasn't the MoL also adjusted up a tenth?
Guess so. Thanks.
At Fox, Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader is coming back. So we have Fifth Grader, Star Wars, and Toy Story all returning again. What the hell is going on here?
FOX"s second Dark Age has officially begun.
Two quick (and final) questions. What were the ratings and demo for the series finale of Nikita? If the ratings was 0.82 does that mean 820,000? I'm from Australia, so when the ratings goes under a 1 million, I'm not familiar with how the ratings work there in the USA.
Why revive 5th Grader? Don't they have an entire season of The Moment of Truth still on the shelf!?
NBC could probably do a lot worse than just plain abandoning all comedies and going full drama/reality, CDub style. Of course, that'd spark a heck of a lot of "what went wrong for NBC?" narrative given their comedy past, which is probably why it won't ever happen.
But NBC have probably got to a point where they need to stop trying to make something happen that's not going to happen. Quarantine the comedies on Thursdays (especially if The Blacklist can take the lead-in hit, which we'll know in a few months), shoot for niche/18-34/critical value, and with a little luck a Modern Family might come out of it. Or even a Parks. They'd take another Parks right now.
The Chicago franchise is a cash cow waiting to happen. They need to milk it and milk it hard. And on the NBC of today, that means Voice lead-ins.
The Blacklist has yet to show signs of being such a lead-in independent show and they are very rare to happen so I really dislike the Thursday idea. Besides, I am not sure a Modern Family or a Parks can truly be born against a monster like big bang theory. So I say that if they are to give up on Tuesday comedies (and I am still not sure if I agree with that or not, I am just saying that were they to do it), then I would replace your second paragraph by Wednesdays: "Quarantine the comedies on Wednesdays (especially since SVU can take the lead-in hit)". It is also a cleaner option if the idea is to give PD the voice lead-in since they wold just have to slide Laura to 10pm and move PD to Tuesdays.
And by the way, I know we all joke about this but seriously I wouldn't be surprised if we were to hear in a few months that NBC is developing a Chicago MD spinoff.
I think it's about time for Fox to remake I Wanna Marry Harry.
Chicago MD is just E.R. A remake of which is also likely in the works.
I think Chicago Med is not a joke, but an idea. Just idea at this moment - first they need to decide if pilot is backdoor or standalone, then write that pilot, then do casting. So, theoretically it might air next fall, but more likely 2 years from now. Or never, you know how it goes with pilots.
It reminds me of NBC reviving Fear Factor.
Please FOX, we are chanting for a "primetime late show", I need this to finish my thesis that NBC and FOX are nemesis, when one is up, the other is down.
CMA effect or should NBC be worried about PD? Better give post-Voice slot for it instead of "The audience won't marry you"
But has anything ever been spoken about by the media/ NBC? I have never see anything other than in comments in sites like these.
@Spot, if possible, maybe a War of 18-49 for Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader? I would greatly appreciate it to get some perspective on its revival. I don't know about the type of player it used to be, I didn't follow ratings as close back then.
NBC comedies are trying to be fetch.
Probably you mean Wolf Films / Universal Television, NBC has nothing to do with. Except to greenlight the pilot, which they surely would because it would come from Dick Wolf.
But, yes, there's nothing official that I'm aware of. But, no, not a joke, see here:
http://www.tvguide.com/news/dick-wolf-chigago-fire-pd-franchise-1072660.aspx
Amanda Righetti (The Mentalist) was mentioned in context of that idea, as she guest starred in both Chicago shows as Dr. Holly Thelan. But she recently was cast in USA Pilot "Colony", Then probably they won't go in that direction. If they're going in any direction at all - maybe they've put a pin in Chicago Med idea, or even completely abandoned it, I honestly don't know.
Thanks for the link and the information!
