Spotted Ratings, Tuesday 11/18/14

WHAT MATTERS:
  • FINALS UPDATE: Chicago Fire (2.1) adjusted up in finals to finish down just a tenth week-to-week (and ahead of a year-ago episode that had a Voice lead-in). The Flash (1.4) ended up even for the second straight week, The Voice (2.7) got back a tenth as well, and Marry Me (1.5) lost one.
  • After getting mowed down by NBC's event last week, CBS bounced all the way back with NCIS (2.6), NCIS: New Orleans (2.3) and Person of Interest (1.6) all growing by three tenths week-to-week. This put each show right back on par with its season average.
  • Despite a low rating for The Voice (2.6) at 8/7c, NBC saw Marry Me (1.6) and About a Boy (1.3) bounce back to near the numbers when they last followed a fully original Voice three weeks ago. And Chicago Fire (2.0) had a particularly promising night at 10/9c; this was its highest result of the season leading out of About a Boy, and just two tenths behind the post-Voice ep last week.
  • ABC shook it up at 8/7c again and improved on recent comedy hours with a Shark Tank repeat (1.1). This may have helped Agents of SHIELD (1.6) a little bit.
  • MasterChef Junior (1.5) finally came back to earth somewhat on Fox; maybe some of its viewers flocked to the Shark Tank repeat? But New Girl (1.4) gained a tenth opposite less competition from NBC.
  • And the CW's The Flash (1.3) was down a tenth and Supernatural (1.0) up a tenth.

I agree with Shark Tank taking away some viewers from MasterChef Junior. I believe that is why ABC went with repeats of Shark Tank in the hour (and maybe to test the waters for a Shark Tank spinoff).

Spot said...

Shark Tank in any form is damaging to Fox's reality shows. MasterChef Junior lost some ground to a repeat this go around, and Hell's Kitchen got dinged against an original episode last season. Did Shark Tank steal a tenth from The Voice, too?

While this night was clearly aimed at just filling the hole created by Selfie/Manhattan Love Story, I also maintain that putting Beyond the Tank here should be on ABC's table. Ride the Friday comedies out and put The Whispers on Wednesdays or Sundays (if the original idea was Tuesdays at 8:00). Unless my comment creates a conversation about overall ABC scheduling I'll pause with my ideas here.

Spot said...

Am I wrong for wanting The Flash to steal that tenth back from Supernatural?

Spot said...

State of Affairs is going to be paired with the Apprentice when the Voice ends?

Spot said...

That's the key, then, isn't it? Damaging Fox no matter what? That's why Shark Tank ran their stupid race up against a race on Fox Sports 1?

Spot said...

If Beyond the Tank was MasterChef Junior situation = with one cycle in the bag, meaning network has (small, albeit valuable) sample, and knows it won't collapse, and make things on a struggling night even worse - then I would be mildly against that idea. For: It will skew male, and ABC doesn't really have other male skewing options to lead into SHIELD. Against: it's natural companion for Shark Tank on Friday, where it would be of a more help to its lead-out.

But as it is, I'm strongly against idea, because Beyond the Tank is completely unknown value. I would like ABC to first test Beyond the Tank on either Friday 8 PM in season, either on Friday 9 PM during summer, and not immediately attempts to use is for fixing holes on their schedule.

Spot said...

NBC as usual. Returning shows doing OK, while newbies are doing awful. And not only on Tuesday. On average it consists bad, but not awful season.
If season would end today, this is how I would rate their shows' seasons:
B+ Chicago Fire
B Law and Order: SVU
C+ The Blacklist
C The Voice
C Parenthood
C Grimm
C- Chicago PD
D The Biggest Loser
F About a Boy

D State of Affairs
D The Mysteries of Laura
F Marry Me
F Bad Judge
F "A to Z"
F Constantine

Spot said...

I think it's simple than that and ABC was simply using what is clearly its best repeater on the whole schedule, but that may have been an added bonus.

Spot said...

I agree 100% with this. The Friday comedies don't need replacement. There is room for improvement but the hour is fine enough. They should use Beyond on Tuesdays. I would keep The Whispers Tuesdays at 10 as well though. Just run Forever straight through to get it out of the way by Feburyar.

Spot said...

Beyond the Tank is not completely unknown. It's a spin-off (or brand extension if you prefer that phrasing) of a known product. Any new show that doesn't have some roots with an already established product is the complete unknown since there's a complete lack of familiarity. Beyond at least has some kind of base.

Spot said...

It's not necessarily about damaging Fox. That network has shown it's capable of that on its own. Whatever funky format change Shark Tank did for episode 100 is its own fault (I don't watch the show so I can't comment on content).

Spot said...

Based on the hashtag #SharkTank100, they ran an auto race instead of just doing a regular episode.

Spot said...

I doubt that Forever is far enough in production to accomplish wrapping up 22 episodes by the end of February. It's why networks will add episodes to a drama's full season count by November; the lead time needed to accomplish that is much more than a sitcom's. Castle's season 5 clip show "Still" came about because ABC ordered another additional episode in late-February/early-March.

ABC could cut the episode order for Forever back, though. Feels less likely to happen, though.

Spot said...

Beyond the Tank is only 10 episodes order. Then, what would air for other 10 weeks?

If Forever ratings would fall to Lucky 7 levels, they would stop production, and air already finished episodes on Saturday, Or never.

Spot said...

I would do Shark Tank repeats.

I would do:
Winter: Shark Tank repeats | Carter | Forever
Spring: Beyond the Tank | Shield | The Whispers

Shield has double finale and makes up for the gap with beyond's order.

Spot said...

Sleepy Hollow will in theory end by then and it's only 4 episodes less, and I suspect that as a fantasy show it takes longer to produce than a (mostly) procedural show. But I could be wrong about this, I don't really follow production cycles enough to know it. And I admit I don't have precedence for this.

Spot said...

I think Modern Family still counts as best repeater. But Shark Tank is a really good out of timeslot repeater

Spot said...

I don't think the returnees deserve such bad grades. Particularly:
- Fire is down less than league average despite airing out of much worse lead-in for a good portion of its episodes. For growing in PLUS alone, I would give it A-. And I think it will end the year as NBC's strongest show (it just grew 0.2 at 10h30 half hour last night, I doubt blacklist could do so)
- SVU is also only down 5% year to year. That's growth in PLUS after an already overachieving season. Then I think B+ is warranted, at least.
- The Blacklist... meh.. no major disagreement
- Parenthood is down league average only, despite an even worse situation than last fall (at least early Michael J.Fox had some okay ratings, and Murder is no easier than Scandal), so maybe C+ at least
- The Voice is down barely more than league average. For a show that airs two cycles a year and all that, I don't think that warrants a C.

But overall I agree with your message (I would only say it's too soon for State of Affairs, but ok)

Spot said...

Then, in 2015 you would use
1. 10 hours of Tue 8 PM for around 1.0 rated Shark Tank repeats.
2. 12 Tue 10 PM hours for soon to be bellow 1.0 Forever.
3. 7+ Fri 9:30 PM hours for soon to be bellow 1.0 Cristela / FotB.
4. 10 hours of Tue 8 PM for could-be-flop Beyond the Tank.

Meanwhile, they ordered 5 midseason dramas, out of which 3 your schedules pushes to summer (some in April already maybe, though, if Nashville or Revenge or Forever would air repeat-free and end season early). I mean, your schedule leaves only Thu 10 PM and Sun 9 PM for midseason drama premieres, both in March.

While I believe 1 or 2 those dramas are indeed planned for summer/late spring, only ABC not wanting to announce it until they're absolutely sure they won't need it earlier, pushing 3 of 5 dramas to summer, and no premieres until March (excluding "bridge" series for Jan/Feb) seems unlikely too me.

Spot said...

No, it doesn't. This is how I would schedule the midseason dramas:
- The Whispers: Tuesdays at 10 in the Spring, following the second half of Shield (as stated in my previous post)
- Secrets and Lies: Thursdays at 10 as expected
- American Crime: I would end Nashville early and air it Wednesdays at 10 (if not possible to air all Nashville repeats free due to production restrictions, then air the last third of the season in the summer)
- Members Only or Wives Club: Sundays at 9, whichever they like best

This leaves only one drama to summer

Spot said...

Probably it will steal it.

And, 1.4 would mean its ratings for 6th episode would be at 74% of premiere ratings. Nice.

There's no pattern in how superhero shows hold in post-premiere week, each show is story for itself.
6th episode A18-49 ratings compared to premiere ratings:
92% Arrow 1.3 --> 1.2
74% Flash 1.9 --> 1.4
67% Gotham 3.3 --> 2.2
57% Constantine 1.4 --> 0.8 (4th episode)
53% SHIELD 4.7 --> 2.5

Spot said...

Shark Tank wasn't that much down last week. The show is averaging a 1.87 so far this year and last week had a 1.8. It's a passable rating, all you can say is that there was no spike with the 100th episode or the lack of competition. I think the 1.7 before adjustments made it look worse than it actually was.

Spot said...

Sleepy Hollow has had its 18 ep order since this time last year though, so they had time to start production work earlier if need be.

Spot said...

Maybe you're right then. I actually think I remember reading that they started production extra early.

Spot said...

ABC just announced part of its midseason schedule!

They swapped what they had announced: American Crime will go to Thursdays and Secrets and Lies will go to Sundays.

I don't like it, I think American Crime doesn't fit at all on Thursdays after Scandal (it looks to be extremely slow paced) while Secrets and Lies would probably be in the same wheelhouse whereas on Sundays it feels like an odd fit with OUAT (though an okay one with Revenge).

If The Odd Couple hits, CBS may take the night back from ABC in the Spring with this move.

Spot said...

They just announced part of the schedule btw.

Spot said...

Well, that helps. It leaves only 2 questions. Or 2 important.
1. Tuesday.
A. 10 PM is Forever, followed by The Whispers, and Beyond the Tank on 8 PM (they'd need to burn off Forever on Saturday for this).
B. Both Forever and The Whispers are on Tuesday, with Beyond the Tank on Friday (they'd need to cancel Cristela and double up LMS for this).

2. Members Only, and Astronaut Wives Club.
A. Both are summer shows.
B. They'll squeeze in one of those two soaps on Wednesday somehow. Perhaps, Nashville airs 6 episodes early in 2015, goes to hiatus, moves to Sunday 10 PM in April for last 6 episodes (for this they'd need to air Revenge repeat-free if production allows it).

Spot said...

Yes, this is viable. They would need to cancel Forever after 13 episodes, though. That back 9 order is still head scratching, on any possible level.
In my other recent comment " It leaves only 2 questions" I said how it could work.

Spot said...

With the delay expected Thursday due to the presidential speech, how do you see TGIT doing?

Spot said...

But that's exactly it: CBS went off the map (they were stronger on Saturday!) in a big way that ABC and NBC should have been able to capitalize on. Only Last Man Standing and Dateline did. Instead of tying a season low Shark Tank should have been able to tie its season high.

Spot said...

In other news, the Bill Cosby sitcom is done for. What does this mean? Could it be that my wish for NBC to stop making comedies and go the CW route has come true? Or is this is just an idiotic pipe dream in my head that I believe should happen, but most definitely will not? ...'s probably the latter.

Spot said...

Or move Nashville to the summer. I don't think ABC is that high on the show anyway, so shove it to Wednesdays where it'd get the same kind of lead-in it's had from Mixology and Super Fun Night. Or Sundays at 10:00 after another soap. (I've been writing a fantasy schedule and that's where I shoved it.)

Spot said...

It's not like American Crime was a great lead-out for Once Upon a Time anyway. I think of ABC moving Secrets & Lies to Sundays as them trying to recreate Desperate Housewives through science or magic.

Spot said...

I think ABC might not air it. I don't get why NBC doesn't air it though. They always do best on simulcast when it comes to politics and it's not their lineup is doing great or anything

Spot said...

Before season, I would be 100% on board with that idea. Season 2 ratings were really weak, and it's supposedly rather cheap (thanks to all those Tennessee & Nashville tax breaks) for drama - then kick it to summer at some point.
But now that Nashville is constantly pulling those 1.4s and is clearly their 7th strongest drama, it looks too good to be wasted on summer.

I can't believe what I just said. I mean, after bashing Nashville ratings for most of the Season 2.

Spot said...

For what it's worth, Deadline about American Crime not airing at Sunday 9 PM:
"I hear it was considered too dark for 9 PM."

It's not very good explanation, but at least is plausible one, unlike some other being thrown around.

Spot said...

I agree with Patrick's comment: ABC shouldn't bother and just run a crawl at the bottom of the screen with the announcement. NBC should go wall-to-wall with the coverage. CBS could go either way since its sitcom block isn't doing dynamite numbers like TGIT. And apparently CBS is airing originals of everything minus TBBT next week (i.e. Thanksgiving night). Really? Waste a night of new programming on a holiday and against a football game on NBC?

Spot said...

ABC might not air what? TGIT or the presidential speech?

Spot said...

CBS originals on Thanksgiving? It's like you want to fail.

Spot said...

CBS is being run by monkeys this year (at least the scheduling department).

Spot said...

I'm projecting ahead to when Nashville will swoon later in the season. Dipping to Elementary-esque levels are a distinct possibility. But maybe it'll hold up better with the same, strong lead-in all season long as opposed to the shows that have rotated through there (Mixology, Super Fun Night, How to Live, Suburgatory, and that one episode of The Neighbors).

Spot said...

What presidential address.

Spot said...

It's logic that I would sort of get if November sweeps were still going; that's why Friends occasionally had a new episode on Thanksgiving. But this doesn't make sense.

I imagine CBS will ask Nielsen to designate them as specials to not count in their season averages, similar to how ABC did in years past with the Wednesday sitcoms on Thanksgiving eve.

Spot said...

Apparently, Barack Obama will speak on Thursdays at 8 p.m. regarding his immigration policy.

Spot said...

I, too, am a little disappointed American Crime isn't debuting on Sunday but Scandal will definitely provide more eyeballs to sample it. It honestly looks like the best television drama to debut in years based on the short clip I've seen and everything I've read about it. I don't think the Odd Couple will beat anything. Matthew Perry's triumphant return to television will probably have to wait a while longer.

Spot said...

Did Barack clear this with Shonda first?

Spot said...

I don't think it's a sign of NBC's comedy situation as it is an acknowledgement that Bill Cosby is so toxic right now that you need a hazmat suit to get within 500 feet of him.

Spot said...

They do! It's supposed to be something done without question. But I saw an article saying NBC, FOX, and CBS had declined and ABC was undecided. I get CBS not wanting to mess up Big Bang Theory, but NBC has preempted Sunday Night Football for addresses, they should be able to preempt the Biggest Loser

Spot said...

Guess not.

Spot said...

Toxic? Did he insult Shonda Rhimes' work too?

Spot said...

Hopefully, ABC realizes that they're better off without it and drop the presidential address to air TGIT in it's entirety.

Spot said...

Nashville always seems very lead-in independent. It's like same crowd comes out of thin air just to watch it. I swear, I think it would get same ratings leading out of Selfie repeat, or Game 7 of NBA Finals.

Spot said...

Fittingly, the only broadcast network for sure airing it is Univision.

Spot said...

It makes a lot of sense.

When will we know if ABC has declined or no (or if the reports of the other networks are true?)

Spot said...

That is very illogical scheduling. They should put higher rated Shonda should lead-in into lower rated Obama, not the other way around.

Spot said...

They should but i don't know.
What are the chances of ABC dropping the presidential speech?

Spot said...

Not sure if you're joking? If you are, OK, but if not...well, you might want to read this, or even just Google his name and look at the news results: https://deadline.com/2014/11/bill-cosby-controversy-nbc-series-plan-1201285605/

Spot said...

...Yeah, I don't think ABC is in charge of when the President speaks. And I also strongly doubt Scandal will be negatively affected. It's still doing strong, even with a weaker lead-in like Charlie Brown on the day before Halloween, and takes place in the gosh-dang White House to begin with. You really shouldn't fear about that.

Spot said...

CNN is reporting that ABC won't air it either.

Spot said...

Of course I'm joking. I was just referencing Katherine Heigl. But I had no idea about the allegations. Keep in mind I don't pay attention to celebrity news minus deaths like Robin and Joan.

Spot said...

Never mind, it appears ABC won't air the presidential speech either.

Spot said...

Or, rather, I think he did because I'm told ABC isn't going to air so I guess one of these two things:
a) Shonda told ABC not to air it;
b) Michelle said that Scandal's winter finale was on and that she wouldn't allow Obama to give a speech, delaying it.

Spot said...

Ha!

Spot said...

I don't think Shonda had to tell ABC not to air the address. They've been promoting the finales and there's no way they preempt the dramas for two weeks for a one-off airing in December.

Spot said...

It'd be the most compatible lead-in it'll ever have! ;)

Spot said...

Which is more dangerous right now: exposure to Ebola or Bill Cosby?

Spot said...

This is an odd fit, unless ABC belives American Crime is such a high profile show to deserve their best drama lead-in.

Silvio's explanation (and the cable competition) are better, Secrets and Lies is basically a soap, odd fit to OUAT, but Revenge was there for a long time (after all, I don't see any show on ABC who isn't an odd fit with OUAT, if SHIELD wasn't male driven, it could be the only one who isn't.

By the way, I would go with The Whispers on wednesdays at 10 with Oscars promotion, move Nashville to sundays while airing Revenge against tough competition (it isn't like is going to get huge ratings anyway). On tuesdays, is could be Beyond the Tank/SHIELD/Forever (let this one ride, ABC could stand 22 episodes of Trophy Wife anyway).

Spot said...

Ebola flat out kills you, Bill Cosby leaves marks that last forever.

Spot said...

Jello just makes me sad now.

Spot said...

It means that Cosby is a serial rapist. Or at the very least, enough people now believe Cosby is a serial rapist that they no longer want to work w/ him.[*] (see also: Netflix had a comedy special planned for his 77th birthday. It's now been postponed indefinitely)

[*I'm personally inclined to believe the accusations to sheer volume plus the fact that, regardless of the narratives that others might sell, false rape reports are extremely rare.]

As for your wish, Eric, I highly doubt that comes to pass, at least this year, if ever. If you can get a comedy up and going, it's mad syndication dollars.

Spot said...

Can we add Ray Rice into this equation?

Spot said...

I'd like to say that Greenblatt probably would have taken the Ebola, but I have a sinking feeling that it's not true. His underlings probably had to threaten to commit mass seppuku in order to get him to walk away from it.

Spot said...

I feel bad for laughing at this.

Spot said...

Honestly, I don't mind. The content in American Crime alone wasn't family-friendly or genre-like to work with Once, nor is it soap-like as Revenge. Secrets and Lies, while not compatible with Once, does seem to have some fitting with Revenge, or at least what I gathered from the premise. And hey, there isn't a whole lot of shows Once could work with. Maybe Galavant or SHIELD or Whispers, but the former two already have plans, and the latter is up in the air. Meanwhile, American Crime has much higher prestige coming from the writer of last year's Best Picture winner, so putting it after the biggest drama on television sort of makes sense. And of course, it could just be ABC has more confidence in Crime that it wants it to have a better lead-in and avoid Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, and [insert cable show here].

As for Odd Couple, I don't see it being a huge contender, let alone CBS winning the Spring. Big Bang will do strong, and maybe Odd Couple if it actually does decently, but 2.5 Men is just barely above the 2's and Mom is only doing slightly above average compared to last season. Add in Elementary being a zombie walking, and the wildcards of Blacklist Thursday and Allegiance also can be added in.

Spot said...

Yup, statistically speaking this many accusations is highly likely to be a smoking gun.

Can NBC get out of the comedy game? As you say, there's big bucks to be made nursing one to 88 (presumably especially so if you can brew broadness, which NBC have blatantly been trying to these last two development cycles). But this is a network whose #1 comedy is Truly weaker than every. SIngle. Drama. They. Have. And with Cosby out of the picture, they're down to Parks (final season), Kimmy Schmidt, and... summer shows?

Spot said...

Don't hold your breath on that first part, Billie. I can totally see a viral epidemic miniseries in the near future. After all, fear = ratings, if it's not so bold-faced about only wanting ratings.

Spot said...

Are you suggesting One Big Happy might not be NBC's next great comedy hit?

Spot said...

"Will the NBC comedy department finally have one big happy moment? That's The Question for {insert date here}, 2015."

Spot said...

Word Salad Title shows tend not to do well. I mean, what does that even mean?

Spot said...

Well, there is One Big Happy and Mr. Robinson, but they're both for 6 episodes unless one of them gets an expansion. I don't expect either to be huge, though maybe one of them gets a Better Off Ted treatment, but NBC probably wants an Office out of one of them.

Spot said...

The CW won the night in M18-34.

That's something I never thought I'd say 5 years ago.

Spot said...

It's like "One Big Happy Family" but *gasp* they aren't a conventional family!

Spot said...

I kind of assumed the show was supposed to be called One Big Happy Family, but someone made a typo on the script, so it stuck.

Spot said...

That's a bad way to go about subverting that trope, then.

Spot said...

Oh, you mean like every other family sitcom ever made ever?

Spot said...

Fox has scheduled empire and idol. Its empire on wednesdays right after idol's premiere

Spot said...

I don't. Ha!

Spot said...

Premiere two weeks earlier than usual. Makes sense, though - this way Idol avoids TGIT for 3 weeks (returns from hiatus 1/29/2015), and The Blacklist completely (Idol will shrink to two hours per week after first 3 weeks, after auditions episodes are over). Funny, Death Star is now scheduling around other shows.

As I expected, there still will be 3 hours per week during auditions. That episodes are still highly watched, so it perfectly makes sense.

Only, this season those 2-hours editions will be on Thursday. Also makes sense, it gives Empire early start, when some networks might still be in repeats or fillers.

Spot said...

Also, it feels like it's going for the sort of vibe associated with cable hits. Good luck pulling that one off Sunday 9pm.

Spot said...

I'd bump Laura up to a C or C- too. And I'd bump up CF to a full A after these finals. 2.1 out of a 1.3!!

Spot said...

For what, for tracking 10% behind Revolution in A18-49? In other words, almost equal in A18-49+ . I don't think so.

I'll degrade Laura to D- in spite to you. Just kidding.

Spot said...

Because there aren't any commercial breaks?

Spot said...

Any idea for a FOX midseason schedule?

Mondays:
Gotham and Sleepy Hollow will air 10 fall episodes, if they come back in january 5th, there are 19 mondays until may 11th (the week where most shows end) and 21 until the last monday of the may sweeps. Sleepy Hollow has 8 episodes left and they can replace it for some show with a 13-episode order, probably Wayward Pines, but they'll need to air at least 7 repeats of Gotham.

Tuesdays:
Do they premiere Backstorm self-starting at 8 PM or do they move Bones and try Rainn Wilson's new procedural on thursdays at 9 (both stategies look like suicide, but they are thin in options). Or will they just move Bones?

Wednesdays:
Now we know it, Idol + Empire

Thursdays:
Assuming that The Following is a sacrificial show on FOX lineup right now, it could be here, ending in mid-may and starting in early february against the two wolves named Scandal and Blacklist. It could be Backstorm too if they believe Idol has still some potential left to be a lead-in, either option is bound to fail but, again, there are no options. Bones sliding down an hour could be their other choice.

Fridays:
Glee + repeats? Is Backstorm so poor that is going to be thrown here too? (as bad as it sounds, this show is the real wildcard scheduling-wise, I have no idea where it could go and a summer bound is possible too).

Sundays:
Bob's Burgers back to 7:30 when Bordertown starts

Final prediction:
MONDAYS:
Gotham/Sleepy Hollow (winter) then Wayward Pines (late winter and spring)
TUESDAYS:
Bones/New Girl/Mindy
WEDNESDAYS:
American Idol/Empire
THURSDAYS:
American Idol/The Following
FRIDAYS:
Dead air, oops, Glee/repeats

This schedule has the inconvinient of moving Bones, but I don't see The Following at 8 PM and I don't know it is coming back to mondays. Give the post-Idol timeslot is not a reward anymore too.

There is Last Man on Earth and Weird Loners too, but lol at taking FOX comedies seriously.

Feel free to give your opinions.

Spot said...

No.

Over/Under 6 comedies canceled next season?

Spot said...

you guys need to start a fantasy tv scheduler forum,

Spot said...

Mon 8 PM: Gotham, from 3/16 Wayward Pines
Mon 9PM: Sleepy Hollow, from 2/9 The Following.
Tue 8 PM: Backstrom, followed by S3 of MasterChef Junior
Thu: Bones / Idol (Glee on weeks with only 1 hour of Idol)
Fri: Ramsey / repeats

You should be our mod, Mr. Herbaugh. You're a specialist at paring a schedule down to the bare minimum.

Spot said...

They'd need to pick up six new comedies in order to be able to cancel that many after America rejects them all. I'm not sure they're gonna get there.

Under.

Spot said...

One episode per day is all you need to satisfy your TV craving. And I've felt that way since Monday.

Spot said...

Push.

Formula is: NONCNBCR = n - 1
where
NONCNBCR = number of new comedies NBC renews.
n = number of new comedies NBC picks.
1 = number of face saving comedies renewals NBC customary gives.

Of course, you're talking to the person who's not only obsessed w/ accumulating 19-20 hours of live programming, but just watched two hours of The Walking Dead, another hour-ten of British spy drama The Game, and two hours of NASCAR-related content. (one each of Race Hub and America)

I found that focusing on one episode per day is more enjoyable than watching one show after another.

I still take in spoarting events, though many are muted.

Nashville gets some leway for getting some crappy lead ins, but it does nothing with big lead ins. I think one big lead in it would do great with is the CMA Awards

Spot said...

If Gotham really airs the entire season, we are looking at a lot of repeats to be lead-ins for whatever airs at 9pm (either the following or wayward pines). I am not sure how advisable that is. I also don't see the need to move Bones yet again. If they aren't giving either Bones or The Following a good scheduling, it's better to just put The Following on Tuesday and Bones on Thursdays IMO.

I don't honestly have a decent schedule to make with FOX midseason, I've tried many times and nothing works very well to me. Maybe something of the kind, I guess:
Monday:
Winter: Gotham + Sleepy Hollow
Spring: Gotham/Wayward Pines + The Following

Tuesday:
Winter: Backstorm + New Girl + The Mindy Project
Spring: Masterchef Jr + New Girl + The Mindy Project

Wednesday
Winter: American Idol + Empire
Spring: American Idol + ??

Thursday
Winter: American Idol
Spring: Bones + American Idol

Sunday:
Winter: Simpsons+B99+FG+Bob's
Spring: Simpsons+B99+FG+Bordertown

Spot said...

Exactly. FOX scheduled everything in order to avoid competition. They are in bad state so I think it's a good strategy, though it will be awkward when empire ends to increase idol again on wednesdays or to put comedies there.

Maybe they can launch a Ramsey show there that runs into summer later.

Spot said...

We agree! I just don't see the point of that Glee thing on Thursdays. I would rather air two hours of Idol. Regarding the unscheduled comedies, maybe you're right. I have no clue what FOX's plan is for those two. But as far as we know we could even be looking at a goodwin games burnoff, I dunno.

Spot said...

Ahah I find both reasons very funny

How low will Elementary go?

I agree that American Crime would fit in horribly on Sundays, I have been saying that for a while now. But I don't think it will fit in on Thursdays after Scandal either, that's my point. I am not a buyer on that show, at all; I think it belongs on cable for a niche audience, not on broadcast. It may get critics crawling all over it and I am sure ABC will find a way to get it sampled between the Scandal lead-in and the relentless Oscar promotion they will give it with the angle of "coming from the writer of last year's Best Picture winner" thing, but after that? It doesn't seem adequate to broadcast for me. And it sure as hell looks slow paced a la Resurrection which is 180ª far away from Murder and from Scandal. Maybe I am completely off in this but I still say that if they were to air this thing, the only place would have been Wednesdays at 10. At least at that time it wouldn't be leading out of a drama with which it clearly has nothing to do.

As for Secrets and Lies, maybe Sundays isn't so bad and I agree the fit with Revenge is there. But I feel like it would fit with Scandal as well from the promos I've seen. And I feel like something with an alternative angle such as AWC would maybe fit better with both OUAT and Revenge, but still. This is a minor one for me, my main issue is that I really dislike American Crime Thursdays.

The Whispers should absolutely go to the post Shield slot (or to 8 if ABC believes a lot in it but I don't think it has that much potential). It's the only show on the network even remotely compatible. I would have preferred American Crime on Wednesdays but maybe do Members Only on Wednesdays (either run Nashville straight through to end it early or burn the rest of it in the summer) and let Tuesdays be Beyond the Tank + Shield + The Whispers.

Spot said...

It feels like a cable show regardless of the slot IMO. I don't see how it succeeds on broadcast.

Spot said...

Yes, these Fire's finals are incredible.

Spot said...

The CW is on fire on tuesdays. 1.4-1.0 is an excellent score (with one of the two shows in its 10th season!), and pretty stable too!

Spot said...

Probably right. I guess the networks are trying to copy the cable hit formula, ignoring the advantages cable has for those shows: lower initial expectations and the ability to grow through stripped reruns (Breaking Bad wasn't even getting CW bubble numbers in S1, and actually aired an original on Super Bowl Sunday!), and far fewer content restrictions than broadcast. The latter feels particularly likely to be relevant for a show like American Crime - I don't doubt it'll get sampling in that slot.

Spot said...

Which are three hours anyway, yes?

Spot said...

Yes, it's possible after Empire finale, Fox would put Hell's Kitchen on Wednesday, HK will air only around 10 episodes in fall.

Other, but unlikely, possibility is:
Remaining episodes of Hell's Kitchen Tuesday 8 PM between 2 MasterChef Junior cycles with Backstrom on Friday (from February). Maybe with Glee at Fri 9 PM, so they would have no regularly scheduled repeat.

Spot said...

I wanted to point out there's room for shor-order comedies in my schedule. But, yes, there are multiple options for post-Empire Wed/Thu in April.
A, We Idol / Hell's Kitchen - Th Bones / Idol
B. We 120 minutes Idol - Th Bones / Glee
C. We 90 minutes Idol / 1 comedy / Th Bones / Hell's Kitchen (or Glee)
D. C. We Idol / 2 comedies / Th Bones / Idol

Gotham / Sleepy Hollow will air 12 episodes in fall. Both already aired 9, and I expect they will 3 more on 11/24, 12/08, and 12/15. That allows them to squeeze on Monday both Wayward Pines (8 PM, March) and The following (9 PM, 02/09 after 2- hours Sleepy Hollow finale on 02/02). They would just need to air no repeats in 2015, and
- either push last Wayward Pines into summer
- run one Gotham episode on Sudnay out of NFL (Ep. 14 at 01/11 out of NFC Divisional game is possibilityy)

Spot said...

I like this plan but FOX announced both episodes 10 of Gotham and Sleepy Hollow as their fall finales. So, they will be no episodes between next monday and january.

Spot said...

I'm not aware Fox announced it. I really doubt they would do it.

Spot said...

5 weeks hiatus? Well, that's really dumb. I hope they realize what mistake they're making, and nix that decision.

But, thanks. At first I thought you just miscalculated number of so far aired episodes,

Spot said...

This decision is not a good one I think too.

I now believe they will try to run Gotham up until the end of the season with a lot of repeats mixed in. The Following should still air at 9 but it will air mostly out of repeats.

@Spot,

How come Chicago Fire is not getting any TRUE love? It was a true champion this week, a very very impressive performance.
