War of 18-49 Update, So You Think You Can Dance (Summer 2014)

Let's take a look at the summer 2014 season (the eleventh overall) of So You Think You Can Dance on Fox.

Rating the Ratings: It's not quite been a collapse on a The X Factor/American Idol scale, but So You Think You Can Dance got weaker once again in season eleven, and it was pretty easily the show's weakest season yet even after historical adjustments. It's in highly marginal territory now, but it probably shouldn't be counted out yet. After plummeting to a very ugly 0.9 on August 20, the show may have helped its chances by rising to 1.1 and then 1.3 in the last two weeks; the finale result was down just a tenth year-to-year. We're in a bit of a summer programming bubble right now, with marginal originals preferred over much weaker repeats, and Fox is the most desperate network of all. I would guess it comes back again, but it's weak enough now that I don't consider it a lock either. Grade: C-.

Here's the now updated War of 18-49 post for So You Think You Can Dance.

There are shows on Fox now that are hitting sub-1.0: Utopia, Red Band Society, and Gracepoint. Some shows aren't that far behind: Mulaney has stayed above 0.x due its lead-in's strength while New Girl and The Mindy Project could fall that low if they follow their past trajectories. And all of these programs air in a more favorite part of the calendar when viewing levels are higher.

SYTYCD, though, had to face the double whammy of Big Brother and America's Got Talent, and ABC's incredibly potent sitcom reruns were no pushover either. My best guess is it gets one more season; this show so was hugely important to Fox that I can't imagine it not getting a season-long kiss goodbye.

Losing to Big Brother and AGT Results isn't a big deal. Losing to AGT recaps is I guess still okay maybe. But it also lost to The Middle (R), The Goldbergs (R), Modern Family (R), and I'm pretty sure Criminal Minds (R) at some point too. With Riot! and Harry flopping and Hell's Kitchen and Masterchef taking big steps down this summer, it might squeeze through. But it doesn't really have a ratings case
