Rating the Ratings: Like everything on Fox these days, MasterChef took a big drop last season. But given how things started, Fox might be willing to take it. The disastrous 1.5 premiere (down 29% year-to-year) on May 26 was apparently a function of Memorial Day, a holiday that I didn't think was all that detrimental in past years. Fortunately, it ended up being the low point of the season. MasterChef steadily rose through June and July, peaking at a couple 2.1 ratings in late July, then trickled back down into the high-1's late in the season. Grade: C.
Here's the now updated War of 18-49 post for MasterChef.

I think this one is way too harsh considering the FOX landscape. And it's not like 17% is THAT bad. I would give it a B- or so. Let's just say that the only programs likely to average better than this during the regular season are likely to be Gotham and the cartoons.
I think a C is warranted. Masterchef wasn't losing a big lead in or anything. It's season average is below last season's low. The rising throughout the season is deceptive as this is a bachelore type show that alwayw gains steam later in the season.
Perhaps the Junior edition hurt it. Like how Wipeout used to get hurt airing Winter and the Summer. Some of the once a year novelty wore off. Of course it was airing at the same time as Hell's Kitchen, the end of Kitchen Nightmares, and later into Hotel Hell. Too much of the same thing?
After historical adjustments, this was the first season that MasterChef dropped y2y. And that series low just looked too ugly even if it's not historically the show's low point. Just because the show is a positive standout relative to Fox's other programs doesn't necessarily mean that it should warrant a higher grade when you look at MasterChef's other seasons.
I was going to give a C+ but Chris and Patrick counterarguments made me change it to C.
It's hard to ignore FOX current situation but the y2y changing is the main reason for grading a show anyway.
Fixed!
