- On Monday, Under the Dome (1.2) dipped another two tenths. Considering its previous episode was a new low against the Emmys, this is getting kinda ugly. I've always assumed this show looked pretty safe for a season three, but the next three weeks are at least worth monitoring. And next week's ep may get derailed by the same tennis overrun that damaged last year's penultimate episode.
- In an encouraging sign for this fall's NCIS: New Orleans, a repeat of the two-hour backdoor pilot (1.3/1.5) posted the best repeat numbers for NCIS all summer. It may have even damaged America's Got Talent (1.8), which plunged to a new low that was actually even below the results show the next night (2.0).
- Fox wrapped up So You Think You Can Dance (1.3) with a second straight week of two-tenth growth, putting this finale just a tenth behind last year. The show keeps getting weaker each year, but Fox may well keep it around for lack of summer alternatives.
- Wednesday also saw a really strong result from Penn and Teller: Fool Us (0.7), up two tenths after five straight 0.5's.
- And ABC did solid work with a two-hour marathon of The Goldbergs repeats (0.9/1.0/1.1/1.2).
- And Thursday was all about the return of the NFL (10.2), which shook off some weak preseason results and went just a single tenth behind last year's opener. This game didn't even have the huge ratings draw Peyton Manning (as last year's did), so this is quite a promising start for the league.

Also to be noted Running Wild dropped another 2 ticks and is now sub one. Renewal chances seem slim now.
Under the Dome is below NCIS repeats. Only 3 ticks above completely dead Reckless and 2 ticks above bubbler Unforgettable this week. Trending -40% y2y with this episode down a whopping 56%! I say just cut their loses here. One great season and one so-so rated season. We don't need a possible sub 1 season 3
Considering how much CBS kept pushing the information that Under the Dome was cheap for them due to the Amazon deal, I do think the show gets a third season even with these lows. They don't want to only have Big Brother going into next summer. (Unforgettable looks like a cancel since it's getting the Saturday burnoff situation.) Heck, it's still beating the averages of both Hostages and Intelligence in a worse situation.
There was a lot of multi-tick, week-to-week growth: So You Think You Can Dance, Taxi Brooklyn, The Quest, Big Brother (Thursday), America's Got Talent (Wednesday). Only in the case of SYTYCD do I think it makes a difference; the other shows are either locks to return (BB, AGT) or are just finishing out their runs (Quest, Taxi).
And while the Deion Sanders episode got promoted in the Packers-Seahawks game... it'll be up against Giants-Lions on ESPN. Amazing scheduling, NBC. The one week in which Wild is up against a regular season game throughout transmission, you put the Deion Sanders episode. Between that and putting the athlete-led TBL against TNF (not that I have any complaints about this, because I am willing that show to cancellation), it's like some vestiges of the old distant-fourth NBC is still there in the scheduling department.
Unforgettable got a single Saturday episode. Reckless is being burned off
Fair point! Maybe the actual error was having the athlete edition be the fall run, when it may have fitted better in the spring.
There's logical place for it. Put it on the bench.
With Blacklist at Thu 9 PM (when they're so keen to kill the show, I'd put it at Wed 10 PM), and new drama at Mon 10 PM in September. New Thursday comedies at 8 PM - they're DOA anyway.
Then what airs Thursdays at 9 all season?
I wonder if perhaps there was morbid curiosity to see if the Seahawks could deliver another Stupor Bowl-level performance against a team who had no business being that bad (which, obviously, they did).
It invites the question of why renew Unforgettable at all if it's going to get the Saturday treatment even once. CBS could have double-pumped Unforgettable on Sundays to run out its order and shifted Reckless to Saturdays entirely if they wanted the former to still be in the mix for a 4th season.
I wouldn't put new comedies on NBC Thursdays at 8:00. Let Parks & Recreation (and a renewed Community) take the hit in the Fall against TNF/TBBT, then launch The Biggest Loser alongside The Blacklist in February.
If Unforgettable holds the 1.1 from today I think it will be a lock for season 3. Especially if it can keep a 1.0+ for the finale. I honestly think the Saturday was a scheduling only due to overrun. Tuesdays at 10 would have been a better slot though
I'd go with Hollywood Game Night. NBC's half-assed attempt at scheduling Thursday with The Biggest Loser is going to blow up in their face. They should just rolled over and played dead in the Fall a la ABC Thursdays in the Winter last season with low priority/ending series (a renewed Community, Parks & Recreation, Hollywood Game Night, Parenthood), then gone full-force come February with The Blacklist and its surrounding pieces. Save The Biggest Loser for Sundays post-Event season or do a truncated season on Mondays or Tuesdays.
There are easier ways to address an overrun, though. And I don't know if I put too much stock into the increase; viewing levels are probably starting to come up in general as rerun ratings tend to increase slightly before the new season starts (though Spot would have actual information to say if my conjecture is true). I don't
But now that you mention it, I would have done this if I were CBS for the summer:
Monday: Rotation of remaining sitcoms / NCIS: LA / Under The Dome
Tuesday: NCIS / Unforgettable / Person of Interest
It spreads the new entertainment programming wealth to all 5 weeknights assuming Reckless stays on Sundays, trains fans for LA's move to Monday, and gives both dramas a compatible (though in the case of Unforgettable much lower-rated) lead-in.
+1
Only maybe it would be better Hollywood Game Night at 8 PM with comedies at 9 PM. That way comedies would avoid TBBT.
The Biggest Loser on the bench, in the midseason NBC puts it on the weeknight that needs help. If none needs it, then great, TBL to Sunday.
