Rating the Ratings: The small drop in the fall season of Dancing with the Stars was encouraging, and even better things came for DWTS in the spring. This season not only grew 2% vs. the last spring season, but it also had narrowly better raw numbers than the last two fall seasons. So a franchise that looked in 2012-13 like it might soon flirt with the league average was suddenly very close to being a hit again. The finale's 2.4 was a bit of a hiccup (down from last spring's 2.7), but it seems pretty certain that was because it faced The Voice's finale head-to-head for the first time. It's a lot to ask this show to return to vintage DWTS levels, but it's impressive enough that it seems to have regained the momentum in the Monday reality battle with The Voice. Grade: A-.

Here's the now updated War of 18-49 post for Dancing with the Stars.

What's impressive about this season of DWTS is that it faced The Voice 100% of the time. So even without an inflationary event (airing the premiere and/or finale while dodging The Voice) it still grew. And had it not found that low on May 5th opposite 24: Live Another Day it may have been able to be a Hit again.

It's pretty astonishing how well DWTS has turned the corner. What's actually changed besides the one-night format?

They had the big advertising gimmick of where people could switch partners. I think that helped some initial interest, but it clearly did well all season. They did have a "Disney Theme" night too

When ABC decided to keep DwtS in the fall and late-spring, I thought that they had made a mistake. They seem to have been right not to panic, though.
