- After a disappointing premiere, Extant (1.5) had a good hold in week two, dropping just a tenth week-to-week and brightening its prospects a bit.
- But a good week two hold doesn't mean you've necessarily settled in, as Taxi Brooklyn (0.8) can attest after inching down again in week four. But America's Got Talent (1.3) goes original next Wednesday, which could help matters.
- Maybe I jinxed So You Think You Can Dance (1.0) a couple weeks back when I said it was holding up nicely. It's shed two tenths each of the last two episodes, and it's now getting walloped by repeats of America's Got Talent. And again, the Got Talent originals will join the mix next week, which can't be a good thing. Dance is not even doing meaningfully better than ABC repeats (which, by the way, have been way up year-to-year throughout July). It looks like SYTYCD should settle in for another rocky ride to renewal.

I'm assuming, having never watched an episode of SYTYCD, that it's got a similar structure to shows like The Voice and American Idol: an audition phase that's highly rated (relative to the show's average) before the ratings lull kicks in as the show shifts into elimination mode. It's not great for the show that it's hitting that lull right as AGT comes onto the scene with original episodes. But SYTYCD is probably another show that stacks up better in 18-34, especially in the female half of that demo, and is safer than we think.
Big Brother is clearly the How I Met Your Mother of CBS' reality shows. It's an island unto itself in terms of skew (only HIMYM eclipses it by that measure while Friends With Better Lives and 2 Broke Girls barely get there) that is probably underpriced in ad value just by virtue of being on the "wrong" network. Seriously CBS, next year develop some summer sitcoms to air after Big Brother. In fact a BB/Friends with Better Lives/Bad Teacher/Extant night would not have been a bad idea if Extant wasn't so high-profile.
Speaking of, Extant's one tick drop looks ok until you consider that Big Brother had a uptick of two-tenths week-to-week. I think that may be masking a drop-off that may not come into view until AGT shows up.
I've also spoken about the idea of holding FWBL and Bad Teacher as real investments for summer (and not making it sound like burn-off). I really think both of those comedies, especially FWBL, would have fit in greatly with the BB audience. Of course, another possibility would be to use TBBT reruns to launch another comedy since those reruns rate so high all the time. About Extant, I would have simply paired it with Dome on Mondays, or alternatively, putting it after BB but on Thursday replacing Elementary repeats (which will soon be less crowded than Wednesdays anyway as soon as Got Talent arrives).
