Rating the Ratings: The Vampire Diaries took its biggest decline yet in season five. -17% still isn't that bad for a CW show, really, but it was a bit more distressing because of how it happened. It seems pretty likely that The Vampire Diaries became a weaker show over the course of the season. It was quite stout in the fall, regularly hitting a 1.3 rating that was pretty close to its level from the previous fall. It dipped to more like a 1.1 at the end of the fall and early winter, then to roughly a 1.0 in the late winter, and then it really got hammered by the spring when it had a mix of 0.7's and 0.8's. Those spring deliveries were often down 20-30% from the spring 2013 numbers. It will have to perk back up to a 1.0+ in the fall to avoid even uglier declines on the horizon. Grade: C.
Here's the now updated War of 18-49 post for The Vampire Diaries.
