- Sundays in the summer remain a tough nut for the broadcasters to crack. ABC was first to give it a crack, but it had a relatively soft start from new singing competition Rising Star (1.5 on 6/22). This may have been a bit stronger than ABC's last major music competition premiere foray, Duets (1.7 on 5/24/12), given it's over two years later and the show skewed a little younger than Duets. However, the general point is the same: this is not ABC's game-changer, and it's even farther from being that after a 20% week two drop (prelim 1.2 on 6/29). It soundly lost to NBC's special America's Got Talent (2.1) on 6/22 and had to deal with the always potent BET Awards (3.1) last night.
- It got even uglier last night as CBS entered the fray. Though Big Brother (1.8) continued its solid start, nearly even with the 2013 Sunday premiere (1.9), CBS continued to surround it with weak and highly incompatible pieces. New drama Reckless (0.6) retained a paltry third of the BB demo (yet 70% in total viewership). Since the return of Unforgettable (0.9) actually picked up some steam at 10/9c, CBS may be tempted to try flipping the dramas around here (or they may just kill Reckless altogether).
- The biggest cable story on 6/22 was the solid premiere of TNT's drama The Last Ship (1.2 with 5.33 million viewers), the closest thing to a new breakthrough on cable this summer to date. It joined a softening Falling Skies (1.0 on 6/22), which tied its series low and was down big from last summer's 1.5 start. HBO brought back True Blood (2.2 on 6/22) for its final run in relatively healthy fashion, down just a bit from last year's 2.4 start, and starting last night it led into new HBO drama The Leftovers. Much more cable to come!
- 6/29 UPDATE: The Last Ship (1.1) had a solid week two hold; not so much for True Blood (1.6), which plummeted to easily its lowest number since season one (excluding a 4th of July episode in season four). The Leftovers (0.8) opened at half of True Blood's delivery.

Maybe ABC should just stop trying to get into the singing competition business. We can add Rising Star to the failed list of Duets, Sing Your Face Off, and The One.
I would not be surprised if CBS pulls Reckless before the end of the week. While Unforgettable is also incompatible with Big Brother it at least had better volume.
Almost no matter what, Under the Dome will post CBS' best Monday at 10:00 numbers since...Under the Dome's first season finale. All it has to do is crest the 1.8 Hostages pulled in its premiere. So to that I say...yikes.
Once again, CBS is giving the drama its best possible rerun lead-in with The Big Bang Theory. And this time there's also no Stanley Cup game to get in its way.
Over.
Over.
I say Over at 2.7.
Over. I love the following too but I kind of expected its collapse a bit (I had it at a 2.0 average for the season, which would still be very optimistic today lol). Here, I am expecting some fall, but not to the same extent. At the very least, I see it opening big.
The overrun for the penultmate episode kinda wrecked all the momentum. I'm saying over
I'm not totally convinced because of the negative reactions that the finale appeared to get..but I'll say over for the premiere at least.
Maybe they should avoid singing competitions, but the upside to getting a reality show working is so great that it makes sense for ABC to keep plugging away until they find something that works.
I think, in general, networks should be taking more chances on reality and game show formats. They try too few, they are overreliant on importing "hot" formats (despite them not really being proven successes elsewhere), the shows are too similar to each other or over-reliant on gimmicks, and US adaptations are too often ridiculously overproduced which completely sucks the fun out of them.
Good line.
I'm going with over because if I lose, everybody does.
Easily over at around a 2.8 and 11 mill. Viewers.
I agree that ABC should be trying to develop a new hit reality show instead of trying to find yet another variation on The Bachelor (The Bachelorette, Bachelor Pad, Bachelor in Paradise). I like the concept of something more game show-y like The Mole or Whodunnit but I want something more elevated than Bet on Your Baby. The challenge is finding something that can also skew young; I loved Gameshow Marathon a few seasons back on CBS but it didn't rate well enough to get a season 2.
With that said, I'm surprised that CBS doesn't produce primetime specials of The Price is Right or Let's Make a Deal for the summer. It'd be a cheap way to keep the lights on during the lull between the end of May sweeps and the start of Big Brother.
The Following had a boost from the Super Bowl in its first ep and fell to pieces afterward because it was so obviously creatively bankrupt by the end of season one. Under The Dome is in a similar situation w/out such a big booster for the premiere. The damage shows right away. Under.
I'm going to call a Following crash. Under.
There's certainly room for a traditional game show out there - closest we've got on network TV now is Hollywood Game Night.
FOX piloted The Chase a couple of years ago - I was actually at the pilot, which took place on the original UK set with the UK host, and I really thought it might get picked up. CBS also piloted a British show on its original set, The Cube, and NPH hosted the pilot so they clearly had pretty big plans for it - got killed off by NBC rushing the very similar Minute to Win It to air, I think. With that show a fairly distant and scarce memory, I think someone could give The Cube a go again.
Under (2.3-2.4)
OVER.
Over
I have to go with what happened with The Following, from its S1 finale to its S2 timeslot premiere, it went down 26%. And seeing how both are hit with disapointing first seasons, and poorly-recieved second seasons, I have to go with under.
Over. At least for the premiere.
Over with a 2.6.
Over at 2.5.
