Spotted Ratings, Tuesday 5/27/14

WHAT MATTERS:
  • The summer season was in need of some good news, and NBC was happy to provide it with another very strong premiere for America's Got Talent (3.0). It nearly matched last year's post-The Voice premiere (3.1) and was noticeably above it in total viewers. That helped new drama The Night Shift (1.6), even with barely 50% retention, to inch past NBC's biggest drama premiere of last summer (Camp, 1.5).
  • Even opposite a strong NBC, ABC had a pretty good night with the return of Extreme Weight Loss (1.3), which was a tick above last year's premiere. And Celebrity Wife Swap (1.2) jumped to a new season high with its most compatible lead-in yet.
  • Then... there was Fox, and the trainwreck we all knew was coming. It started with episode two of Riot (0.6), which was actually a tenth above the post-Glee premiere from two weeks ago. But dating show I Wanna Marry Harry (0.4) dropped huge from the measly 0.7 posted after American Idol last week. Networks usually do away with these "affront to humanity" kinds of shows pretty quickly unless the ratings are outstanding. Since this one's in the complete opposite direction, don't expect it to stick around for long.

I nearly changed my mind even when I said it wouldn't be close... Darn it, NBC. You won the summer and it's not even June.

Is anyone else disappointed in the lack of Tuesday comedy in the summer again? Last season they forced 3 way comedy war at 9 and 9:30, and none of them were there by summer. NBC and ABC cancelled there comedies and FOX shipped them off to repeat horribly on Mondays. This year FOX has three renewed comedies to put here, and NBC and ABC have 1 each. NBC has a solid reason to not air comedy with AGT, and ABC already has Goldbergs pulling double duty on Wednesday. Mostly saying, FOX even a lineup of Brooklyn, Brooklyln, New Girl, and Mindy repeats could outrate this mess!

As did I! *High five*

I have no idea how they will schedule it next year. It seems just wrong to not try another day after the superbowl launch, but that leaves for very little breathing room between cycles, which could be probablmatic. It was probably end up premiering February 2nd and 3rd with a special Thursday airing to help the Blacklist

W/ a show like Harry, Fox wants Hari-Kari.

Spot said...

Jeez. I have been so off the past couple weeks.

AGT did a lot better than I expected especially on those days. Night Shift was Camp 2.0, will probably be adjusted down since halves were 1.8/1.5.

FOX is counting the days for Gotham, is their collapse worse than NBC's post-Friends?

Like Patrick said, NBC is holding a double-edged sword for season 8. Not premiering it one day after the Super Bowl would be a waste but it would also mean overexposure.

The Voice has judge changes, bringing Shakira and Aguilera returning meant good ratings (as spring 2013 kicked with a 4.8 and fall 2013 with a 5.1) but I don't think this will happen next fall. My personal belief is that the show peaked, will still be a solid player for lots of years and there is no doubt that NBC will rather keep it twice a year than yank one of the cycles which would bring them back to low ratings and to FOX's situation without Idol.

Overexposure will come but they will milk the cow until the last drop, it's as important to NBC's recover as Idol was for FOX's growth, will probably be a big hit for a few seasons then stay on the hit zone.
