- It's only the first day of the summer season, and Fox already has three disastrous series premiere ratings under its belt. While Gang Related (0.9) did better than the two unscripted series Fox premiered on the last couple Tuesdays, that's not much of a bar to clear, and it didn't clear it by that much. It tumbled by 40% from Hell's Kitchen (1.5) and went well behind the failed post-Hell's Kitchen launch from last year (Does Someone Have to Go?, 1.3). The network will probably be patient with this show, since they're likely to have an even more pressing issue on Tuesday, but this is not what they wanted.
- NBC had much better news with the return of Last Comic Standing (1.7), back after taking the last three summers off. The show's last season in 2010 premiered at 2.0 and ultimately averaged a 1.74, making this a relatively promising hold across four years.
- ABC's Black Box dropped three tenths in its first airing with no Grey's Anatomy lead-in. And the CW's mini-series Labyrinth wasn't exactly an eye-popper, but it quietly did better than most repeats would.
- Programming note: as usual for this blog, most daily posts during the summer will not go up until finals are released. Unless there's a particularly notable data point, don't expect the noon-ish prelims update. (The noon-ish posts will remain for much of next week, since there are a lot of premieres, but then die down beyond that.) I'll put up a few more details on other summer plans early next week.

Gang-Related producers: "ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?!!!"
Viewing public: "NO! NOT ENOUGH EXPLOSIONS!"
Although, really, I think the lack of explosions are the secondary problem - the primary problem is that this is basically what we call "sleepwalking", on every level. At most, I'm watching two more episodes, especially now that it's bombed.
With MasterChef one of the very few Fox shows not to have fallen below a 2 in its most recent season, I wonder if the overall plague on Fox will drag it down...
Hey Spot, got a Question for ya:
Which will do worse? Riot, Harry, or Gang Related? Either average or which is pulled first. Whichever comes first.
I say Gang Related will air most to all of its episodes, though the end of the run may be on Friday.
Assuming Riot/Harry have basically the same anemic ratings, I think one gets pulled (my money would be on Harry) and Fox adds a second MasterChef hour on Tuesday. If they get 0.3's or something, maybe they'd blow up both of them and do two-hour MasterChef, but they probably would like to have it continue leading into 24.
That has to be the best average NBC has had for 9-10 since September for nonlive programming (discounting Football and Sound of Music Live)
With the exception of Undercover Boss, I don't watch reality TV on principle, but I like Last Comic Standing. Good standup comedy is much harder than good singing or most of the Got Talent stuff. Glad it is succeeding
To also help put Last Comic Standing's debut in context, here are the Thursday non-sports shows on NBC that tied or beat Last Comic Standing's premiere during the regular season:
9/26: The Michael J Fox Show (2.2)
10/3: The Michael J Fox Show (1.7)
10/31: SNL Halloween special (1.7)
11/7: The Voice (2.5)
12/5: The Sound of Music Live! (4.6)
5/1: iHeartRadio Music Awards (1.7)
Outside of MJF's first two weeks, they were all one-offs. And three of the six were ties.
No no. I meant something for "The Question".
And the 2 hour perioid only hit that on 9/26, 10/31, 12/5, and 5/1
