Spotted Ratings, Thursday 5/15/14

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Finales and no NFL Draft meant bounce-backs for the CBS comedies. The Big Bang Theory (4.9) got back over a full point week-to-week and actually went past last year's finale (4.8) after finals, while The Millers (2.3) also got four tenths back. Even Bad Teacher (1.4) inched up, despite a repeat Two and a Half Men lead-in (1.8) at 9/8c. However, Elementary (1.4) really limped to the finish with a new low at 10/9c opposite little competition.
  • Fox continued the surprisingly solid penultimate week of American Idol (2.0), and Hell's Kitchen (1.7) also grew.
  • ABC had a relatively modest end to Sandra Oh's run on Grey's Anatomy (2.6), though a finals uptick at least put it ahead of last week's delivery. NBC's conclusion of Rosemary's Baby (1.0) went a tenth below Sunday's premiere rating. And a downward adjustment sank Reign (0.4) to just its third 0.4.

Looks like Grey's got hit by the bounceback from Idol. But it'll probably get an uptick in finals.

Yikes at Elementary. The show could really be in trouble if How to Get Away with Murder shows heat and NBC gets it act together at midseason after Parenthood ends.

I can think of 2.7 million reasons why Elementary is in no trouble whatsoever. Still, the fact that this years "Mycroft's in trouble!" finale did raise ratings anymore than last year's double-stuffed Moriarty reveal.

I personally blame the NASCAR decline on the decision to race Kansas instead of Darlington. The fandom's antipathy for 1.5-milers like Kansas is well known, doubly so when they seem to benefit at the expense of more unique tracks like Darlington.

CBS will get this show to syndication with the largest episode count it can, no question (I feel a Friday or Sunday move coming if the show has another large dip like this season's -20%+ swoon). But this result still doesn't bode well for the show on its ratings merits alone.

I honestly was not expecting Criminal Minds to come out as top drama this week. But with The Blacklist and NCIS slightly underperforming this spring and Grey's Anatomy being hit by lack of a good lead out, Criminal Minds managed to pull it off. Bravo.

I really don't get how CBS put a first-run 2.5 Men last week against the draft - which destroyed it last year - and a rerun amidst an all-original lineup this week.

I thought it got away with it last week with the 2.1, but a 1.8 for a rerun makes me wonder...
