The Question, Sunday 4/6/14: Will Game of Thrones Assume the Drama Throne?

The Walking Dead may have ended last week. But cable's lock on the #1 Sunday program seems almost certain to continue, because HBO's Game of Thrones is back in the mix. It's another genre drama that's been on the rise since its debut, and with a strong season it could well join TWD in regularly beating every broadcast drama. Will Game of Thrones assume the drama throne? That's The Question for Sunday, April 6, 2014.

Game of Thrones Last Season
2.4 (premiere, 4/1/12, +20% y2y)
2.62 (average, +36% y2y)
2.9 (finale, 6/3/12, +30% y2y)

The only thing really working against this show is that it's on HBO, a premium channel to which less than a third of US households subscribe. Does that limit its Live+SD ratings growth to some degree? I think it does. But the show still seems to be picking up steam in pop culture, including another series high to end last season. So I believe it has enough heat to get past last year's 2.9 high pretty easily. Keep in mind last year's premiere faced the finale of The Walking Dead, and TWD is out of the mix this year, the year-to-year comparisons vs. the 2.4 premiere should be more favorable than the season as a whole.

Over/Under: 3.35.
