Spotted Ratings, Monday 3/31/14

WHAT MATTERS:
  • The one-hour finale of How I Met Your Mother (5.4) posted a massive 54% week-to-week increase, setting a new series high in the demo, in total viewers (12.94 million) and in adults 18-34 (5.8). It's the biggest regularly-scheduled entertainment episode this season for a series not named The Big Bang Theory or The Walking Dead, and after the finals uptick it inched ahead of Breaking Bad's finale from late September. But it's likely to be CBS' last Monday moment of glory this season, as newbie Friends with Better Lives (2.6) adjusted down to lose over half of that lead-in demo rating in its 9/8c preview. This probably does not bode well for its 8:30 launch after 2 Broke Girls in two weeks. But Mom (2.2) at 9:30 and the last episode of Intelligence (1.2) did benefit a bit from this halo.
  • CBS' big bounce had surprisingly little impact on the competition; The Voice (3.4) was the only show that seemed to suffer at all, and even it was down less than 10%. The CW's Star-Crossed (0.4) and The Tomorrow People (0.5!) were even on the upswing.

it is also a high for HIMYM in A18-49, the previous one was a 5.2 :)

Spot said...

I hope the HIMYM ratings get split in the finals so we can get two episodes of big numbers rather than only one ;) wonder what it hit in the 8:30 slot.

Spot said...

Preliminary half hours are 5.1 for 8pm and 5.4 for 8:30.

Fox renewed Dads and Almost Human according to The Hollywood Reporter.
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/masterchef-junior-gets-early-season-686256

Obviously they plan to expand comedies for an hour, because of The X-Factor departure, but it is not unclear if Almost Human is renewed for the fall or as a procedural spackle. And also, what does this mean for Utopia?

What is the high in 18-34 for TBBT, does anybody know? That 5.8 for HIMYM looks insane, I wonder if any other entertainment show on broadcast TV has hit this high this season or in the previous one (obviuosly minus the post SB episodes and such).

Spot said...

HIMYM officially is up in raw numbers year to year!

Spot said...

I know a lot of people didn't like the ending, I thought it made perfect sense, so even if FWBL was comedy gold there would have been a huge drop off.

This could be the first time HIMYM beats TBBT in the same week since 2009

HIMYM allowed CBS to win the night in the 18-34 demo with regularly scheduled scripted programming. I'm pretty sure that even from the East coast I can hear execs peeling out of their driveways and rushing to Carter Bays & Craig Thomas' houses or production offices to talk about How I Met Your Dad face-to-face.

In other news, were there any preemptions on The CW? TTP taking a 0.2 week-to-week upswing is a little headscratch-y.

On a more serious note, ABC Family's "Switched at Birth" / "The Fosters" had spring/season finale last Monday, so it's not so strange The CW shows were up yesterday.

Glee is in similar situation today with Pretty Little Liars season now over. Plus today The Originals are in repeat. But DST kicked in, and The Voice is still in more watched first half of the season (Blind auditions are over, but Battle rounds are still not). And last 2 weeks Glee stopped bleeding probably because of a gimmick only - fans voted for songs to be performed in 100th episode, so they were more "engaged" than usually. I say 2 weeks, because it actually was a 2-parter. So, it's questionable if there's any more room for show to grow, as days of 1.5+ A18-49 (and 2.0+ W18-34) are almost surely over. But most important is authors took a risk - from today's episode plot is entirely focused on New York. No highschool for a while. Or for ever? I don't know. Anyway, ratings will show if they did right listening fanbase. Or it backfires, because they were actually tricked into change by a vocal minority.

Congrats, you ended my three-year streak of not falling for one. :-(

I don't know, quite a few people have pledged to never ever ever watch HIMYD because of how much they hated the finale. If you've got a spinoff coming immediately (like Frasier or Joey) it might not be a good idea to piss off half the fanbase with a controversial last episode.

I doubt it'll really cause that many problems for CBS, but if the show fails, you know the reason that'll be floating around the internet.

I was confused when the link was something different, looked on the HR front page and found nothing - I smelt a rat, but didn't make the date connection!

It says a lot about the state of FOX that a Dads renewal was even halfway believable.

Spot said...

The reception was mixed, I would wait a bit.

Friends With Better Lives massive tuneout was also something very worrying.

Spot said...

But Joey and Frasier had main characters in their spin offs. They only named it HIMYD because they didn't want it to end up like to Goodwin Games

Spot said...

The link is pretty obvious though. A lot of people were left with a bad taste in their mouths, and I've seen comments suggesting that they rename HIMYD to 'How Your Dad Died'. Direct spin off or not, spurned HIMYM fans aren't going to forget.

Spot said...

When was the last time a series finale got such high ratings? Raymond?

Spot said...

To answer my own question, I suspect it was the finale of ER, which got 6.0 in A18-49 in 2009.

Spot said...

I know some people will boycott, but not for good reasons. HIMYM and HIMYD are less Cheers->Frasier and more Cheers->Wings. Same universe and creators, but not direct spin offs

Spot said...

I believe LOST out did that a year later

Spot said...

Edit to earlier post. LOST (5.8) is the last series finale to hit higher. ER is the last to hit a 6, but LOST is the last it have over a 5.4

Spot said...

So, ABC Family's just on repeat right now on Mondays?

Spot said...

I gotta stop underestimating the hype on these things. It often feels like the only thing I can be optimistic about these days is Walking Dead, which is ironic since, creatively speaking, it's the ultimate nihilist show.

Spot said...

I really don't know, but I assume yes, just repeats - because reliable Futon Critic lists no Monday originals until June 16th.

Glee should have split into high school and NYADA shows a couple years ago.

CBS scheduled Person of Interest repeat for Monday 10 PM two weeks from now (April 14th). They already tested it there on December 30th; 0.9 A18-49, not too shabby. But True was only 0.96, as PUT was 32.5. During hollidays season, yet actually higher PUT than for most of Tuesday 10 PM with POI original airing, huh? Don't know were it came from, networks were in repeats, and there was no college football bowl game in primetime. Probably from DVR watching.

A week earlier (December 23th) Elementary did 0.8 A18-49 on Mon 10 PM, True 0.9, PUT 31.6. That's more logical PUT as there was MNF game (Falcons at 49ers) with 13.2 millions viewers, some special at ABC drawing 5 millions, and Hollywood Game Night 3.5 millions.

They still didn't test NCIS: LA there. May mean nothing, because there simply was no opportunity. On December 16th CBS aired penultimate episode of Hostages with finale on January 6th, and Intelligence taking over timeslot from 13th January until yesterday.

Spot said...

Ok, thanks.

Spot said...

ABC Family doesn't air repeats. They just air movies.

Spot said...

Ok so finally watched Mother (I though it was absolutely perfect, I adored it so much), so I can come back here (I was running from spoilers) and actually comment on the numbers. Incredible incredible numbers for Mother, well deserved! CBS will miss the show dearly!

Spot said...

I loved the ending too and I thought it was one of the the best full circle pieces of fiction (in any form) I've seen. So true and honest to the show!

Spot said...

With that finale bringing HIMYM's average to a 3.38, is there any chance that it makes it to megahit land, meaning that the league average would have to drop to 1.69?

Spot said...

No chance. It will probably be much closer to its previous high (172) than to 200. But this completely ensures it will beat the previous high.

Spot said...

Well, it's the same difference. Network hibernation, more or less.

Spot said...

I know. I think a good example is That 70's Show and That 80's Show. Even though the shows had entirely different settings, casts and writers, the link is still undeniable. I don't think that it'll really make much of a difference, but you can't say that an ending this controversial bodes WELL for the show.
