Spotted Ratings, Tuesday 3/18/14

WHAT MATTERS:
  • After finals adjustments, The Voice (3.6) and the third regularly-scheduled originals of lead-out newbies About a Boy (2.1) and Growing Up Fisher (1.8) were all up a tick week-to-week.
  • Fox also had a bounce-back thanks to the 100th episode of Glee (1.1), but a repeat New Girl (0.7) at 9/8c halted that momentum, helping usher Brooklyn Nine-Nine (1.1) to a new low.
  • ABC's special Marvel Studios: Assembling a Universe (1.5) did much worse than the usual Agents of SHIELD original, but much better than the usual repeat. The Goldbergs (1.7) continued to operate apart from the 8/7c hour, growing two tenths week-to-week.
  • And the CW had a new season low from The Originals (0.7), though Supernatural (0.9) adjusted up to merely tie its low
  • Cable: Pretty Little Liars (1.28) had a truly massive 55% finale spike to a season high. After being down double-digits for most of the back half of this winter season, it ended with a finale up 9% year-to-year

Interesting that Shield boosts up when NCIS is not around, but when there's not *really* a new Shield, NCIS doesn't go up. I guess there are people who like NCIS first then Shield second, but not the reverse so much?
Glee still looks like it should die soon.

Very promising week 3 results for About a Boy and Growing Up Fisher. They stayed stable while their Voice lead-in dropped 15%, showing their performance might be real rather than a Voice-boosted illusion.

Spot said...

The Voice didn't drop this week.

You're right, I misread. Whoops! Slightly less impressive then!

It may be stupid but I had decided to be ridiculously optimistic and go over even before the line. I am rooting for this one A LOT. So be it, over.

Spot said...

Over. I'm rooting for this one to succeed, so I'll be irrationally optimistic.

The Tuesday CW prelim results aren't giving me a good omen and I'm doubtful Arrow will bounce back to a 0.9. So working with the logic that The 100 goes a tenth below..under.

I actually preferred "Star-Crossed" over "The 100" when watching those pilots because I felt it had more stories to tell but I presume CW wanted to have a more adventurous series after "Arrow." I admire CW's effort -- it's their version of "Lord of the Flies" meets "Lost." But will the CW crowd want to have a new kind of "Lost"? A good amount will but not enough to exceed your threshold. I predict the UNDER.

Same logic I've used

Under.
I expect 0.7 or 0.8, so I'd really appreciate 0.65 line. As it is, I'll go under, assuming CW brass knew what they were doing when preferring underwhelming The Tomorrow People for the fall schedule. I mean, if this was any kind of gem, I doubt they would wait until March to premiere it .

Over. Possibly some fans of the book will check it out.

I just noticed...With NCIS and Blacklist underperforming lately, the only broadcast drama with a 3.0 average this season could be Scandal (though Resurrection has a shot with its super-limited 8-ep run). Cable looks to beat it - The Walking Dead obvs, Breaking Bad though it only had 3 episodes at 3+, and quite possibly Game of Thrones if its trajectory continues on the path it's been on...

The fact that ABC hasn't understood yet that The Goldbergs should be away from New Girl and that Agents of Shield should be away from NCIS is mind blowing to say the least. I really don't understand how they haven't been swapped.

Spot said...

You're right. The Blacklist and NCIS both need to keep around a 3.07 average for the rest of the season to keep a 3 average.

Spot said...

So, why hasn't ABC flipped Shield & the comedies?
