Spotted Ratings, Thursday 3/27/14

WHAT MATTERS:

  • Fox's new comedy Surviving Jack (1.3) did not get off to a good start. Though it retained the American Idol (1.9) demo by percentage far better than previous occupant Rake, it also had a much weaker Idol to deal with. It's probably on the wrong side of the bubble unless it holds 100%+ of this going forward.
  • On ABC, Scandal (3.1) had a big night, popping into the 3's for the first time since the spring premiere. After finals, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland and Grey's Anatomy each joined Scandal to make for a full night of +0.2's.
  • NBC's repeats of Hollywood Game Night (1.1 at 8:00, 1.1 at 9:00) nearly tied or topped recent original numbers in their respective hours (including the last new HGN from two weeks ago). It's been clear since last summer that this show's greatest value is in its repeatability. Parenthood (1.4) also had a good night, inching above its usual 1.2-1.3 range to its first 1.4+ since October.
  • Not sure what on earth happened to The Vampire Diaries, but at least it got a little less ugly in finals. An adjustment up to 0.8 still leaves it at a new series low, though.
  • The CBS basketball games narrowly outrated the corresponding second Thursday last year, with the Dayton/Stanford opener doing the heavy lifting..

Looks like NBC found another Off Their Rockers-type show in the ratings with Hollywood Game Night. Rockers would actually have been nice to have as a backup this season for NBC much like Body of Proof would have for ABC.

I have to think that The Vampire Diaries is going to get another 0.2 adjustment up. Otherwise this is a very bad result before heading into a two week break and the final 5 episodes of the season. Regardless of a possible adjustment, Reign's 0.6 looks pretty good.

Off Their Rockers would have been great to quickly replace Welcome to the Family and Sean Saves the World

CBS average in 18-49 was rather typical, but up in 18-34. Probably explains the Vampire Diaries drop a little

I'm concerned that the HGN 8pm number is bad news for Community. That being said, I can't imagine NBC regularly scheduling Hollywood Game Night for 30+ weeks.

With the recent pulling and cancellation of Mind Games, I wonder if they are setting some sort of record for number of shows regularly scheduled in a single slot. Counting shows
that have aired at least two airing
there we have Lucky 7, Scandal (R), Shark
Tank (R), Prime: What Would You Do?, Killer Woman, Mind Games, Resurrection (R),
and Wife Swap. And the only thing to do better than a 1.4 in that slot have
been one time airings of the David
Blaine: Real or Magic and the Dancing
with the Stars finale
Ouch.

Though I imagine quite a different gender skew.

2011-2012 season had The Cleveland Show, Allen Gregory, Napoleon Dynamite, and Bob's Burgers all air after the Simpsons
That season also saw Prime Suspect, The Firm, Awake, and Rock Center all air on NBC at 10 on Thursdays
Last season we had Parenthood, Smash, Ready for Love, and Grimm all air regularly in the 10 on Tuesdays slot
Can anyone else think of any other times a timeslot has been so shared?

Ouch. That's a nasty start for Jack. And unless Idol adjusts up, it's a historic sub-2 there! Who could've seen that coming even a couple of years ago? I genuinely couldn't rule out this being the final season now, especially as Utopia is confirmed from the casting call to be a year-long show - at least in recording time.

Parenthood certainly looks like it's landed a telling blow over Revolution with that 1.4.

Spot said...

For sports in general, yes, but a lot of W18-34 are a lot more likely to care about college sports than say W25-54

Spot said...

Idol/Hell both at 1.9 in finals. When will Idol drop from its lead-in?

Spot said...

I can. 26 episodes and 10 repeats has to be cheaper than whatever else they plan on putting there. Community might still come back because Sony will probably forfeit the license fee so the show can get its precious "six seasons and a movie".

Spot said...

Cancel and cancel.

NBC will cancel Revolution and maybe Parenthood, which are not freshmen, Believe and Crisis are done.

Harmon has been stoking the rumor mill the past few days about Community returning AND a good possibility of a movie. I guess more people are emboldened by the success of the Kickstarter funded Veronica Mars movie. I could see the tiny but insanely devoted Community fans even outdoing Veronica Mars fans ponying up cash for a movie. And I'm pretty sure Community, the television series, will return for a limited run next year seeing how bad NBC's comedy lineup is performing. The jury is still way out on The Voice supported About A Boy and Growing Up Fischer. Hollywood Game Night is golden for NBC especially since it repeats better than just about any reality fare on any network so I'm certain NBC will use it to the max as filler.

Spot said...

Parenthood's most recent 1.4 makes me think it still has a chance. I would have never predicted Crisis would grow out of Believe, but they'll both be cancelled

To paraphrase immortal Gina Linetti:

Spot said...

I don't see how Community fans can outdo a group that had been waiting six years for that movie announcement.

Spot said...

Believe is a certain cancellation and Crisis is a likely one too. I wonder if NBC wouldn't have been better off holding off Crisis to premiere it after The Blacklist or something next season. It seems that it has potential and the fact that it grows from its lead-in at 10pm Sunday is an indication of that. But it hasn't really showed enough promise for a tryout elsewhere

Spot said...

Were NBC lousy with their drama roster, then maybe one of them would have stood a chance; instead of preempting Revolution for a SVU rerun in April I would have plugged in Crisis to see how it'd do. But with The Blacklist, Chicago Fire, Law & Order: SVU, Chicago P.D., and either Revolution or Parenthood at the ready for 2014-2015, the Peacock has no need for either one of these to be renewed.

Spot said...

Much like the ratings prowess of The Walking Dead, I see no reason to underestimate the fervency of the Community fanbase. I'd also like to see the Veronica Mars numbers from way back in the day, of course, but that's...difficult.
