Spotted Ratings, Friday 3/7/14

WHAT MATTERS:
  • There was only one mover of note on another Friday of all originals on ABC/CBS/NBC; unfortunately, it was week two of NBC's Hannibal (0.8), and it went in the wrong direction: down by three tenths from last week's semi-respectable premiere. It can't blame its lead-in, as Grimm (1.5) actually ticked up from last week. It's too early to completely write it off, because its financial situation is difficult to pinpoint, but this is an undeniably negative development.

I find extreme frustration from the fact that the Grimy audience (or any audience, for that matter) refuses to embrace Hannibal. It's such an excellent show, yet people seem determined not to watch, even by Friday standards.

Guess the broadcast audience doesn't care. If it was on cable, this rating would be huge. But it'll likely still get renewed. It's so cheap to air, it can easily be used as spackle for any new fall drama that bombs right out of the gate. That's essentially its usage for the past two seasons. Do No Harm was a disaster, and Crossbones was still in production at the time, and since Dracula's a 10-episode series, there goes Hannibal. Little money's lost and the show can please the fans for years to come, due to being low-priority.

Other than sharing a link to the horror genre, Grimm and Hannibal could not be farther apart in tonality, themes (fantasy vs reality) and execution. It would be interesting to learn just how many fans of Hannibal might also be fans of Grimm. I could be wrong but I would guess both shows have mostly unique fan bases, respectively. On paper, at least, a Friday night pairing of Grimm with alternate runs of both Hannibal and Dracula seems to make continuity sense. Both Dracula and Hannibal are clearance priced bargains on one of least viewed nights of the week during the least viewed hour and perhaps just as important (if not more so), the economics, to paraphrase Count Dracula, don't bite or suck.

I wasn't necessarily insinuating that Hannibal and Grimy are automatically compatible because of a (very) vague genre overlap. In fact, I didn't really expect that this pairing would be of huge help to Hannibal because I've seen enough of Grimy to know that the shows are in far different places tonally and thematically speaking, such that they wouldn't compliment one another and be conducive to paired viewing. I was simply expressing frustration that no one seems to have any interest in Hannibal, particularly based on the week two tune out.

From seeing the episode I saw, I can see how Hannibal is very well made, but it is simply not my cup of tea. I felt the same way about Breaking Bad

"Grimy"? That's too funny. It also describes how I feel and my need to shower after binge viewing Hannibal episodes. I wasn't knowingly implying you found any compatibility between Grimm and Hannibal but I would bet the suits at NBC have dedicated at least a few brain cells in studying the appropriateness of the pairing.

Dateline special on Saturday just outdid Hannibal. Not good for the show
