Spotted Ratings, Thursday 2/6/14

WHAT MATTERS:
  • The first night of the Winter Olympics began on NBC with a 6.0 demo rating and 20.02 million viewers. The historical comparisons are tricky here as this night of coverage is a first-time thing, tacked on before tonight's Opening Ceremony because it's sure as heck a better option than airing their regular Thursday lineup. This could be representative of what we'll see going forward, or it could spike when the "traditional" coverage begins tonight. (For the record, the 2010 Winter Olympics averaged about a 6.5 demo but started with a 9.0 on Opening Ceremony night.)
  • Unlike on most of the next 17 evenings, the networks mostly went full-strength against the Games on this irregular night. There was some but not a ton of impact ratings-wise. Most shows were even to a little down. The few shows to hit new lows included CBS' The Crazy Ones (1.7) and Fox's lineup of American Idol (3.1) and Rake (1.1).

Hey Spot, with the Olympics taking over for the next two weeks can we look forward to a Power Rankings update?

Yes, I see what you mean about KH taking over a midweek timeslot. I just think that Bones is doing way too well on a Friday to move it again and I think it's very unlikely KH can do anything closer to it.

On another note, I do think the notion of Friday being for lower priority stuff et all. will tend to disappear. It's gaining more and more ground IMO. We're still not there but I think that in three years or so Sunday will effectively be the new Friday and Friday will be a normal weekday. We will probably still regard it as a bit weaker but the individualism that Fridays have nowadays will probably fade.

Spot said...

Yeah. It was actually planned for this week, but I got sick at the beginning of the week. :(

Certainly we're heading that way - though Sunday difficulty comes from very different competitive pressures, it's still there. Perhaps the CW were ahead of the game abandoning Sunday before Friday...

CBS seem to think Sunday is the new Friday, as they use both nights identically: as a syndication factory outlet store from 9 with a second-tier reality show at 8. Of course, the way CBS handles the many sports overruns is a big part of that - I'd love to see them abandon 60 Minutes, and with the damage that brand took in 2013 and the potential to open up Sundays without it, there's genuine justification to cancel it. Tough to end an institution like that though, and I've little doubt that CBS won't.

Just a random fun fact. 4 years ago Grey's hit a then series low 3.7 against the Olympics and Idol was defeated head to head for the first time. Idol got a distant third this time and Grey's season high is lower than its old low

I think it would be noteworthy to mention the fact that TBBT didn't even blink despite the presence of another 5+ player at the same time. It's unbelievable. Also, it's the show's highest TRUE this season since the premiere!

Spot said...

By the way, The X-Factor has just been cancelled! This year's upfronts will be crazy!!

Spot said...

That window of opportunity for Almost Human is a bit wider now.

Spot said...

That show is defying all odds. I do however think that for it to be renewed, FOX would have to go out of its way since they had basically counted it out already. The problem is that I am not seeing how the show holds up well enough against the Olympics for FOX to feel compelled to go out of its way. I think its chances just improved drastically but it's such a tough call to make!

So Dads finally wins Brooklyn 9-9, for the first time in15 episodes, by a huge 0.09 BTW - and now Dads are suddenly alive?
You really didn't like math in school, didn't you?

Dads are deader than disco, kiddo, don't fool yourself.

Spot said...

Oh, I'd be amazed if Dads did get renewed; if anything, it overtaking Nine-Nine in this of all weeks is a symbol of just how bad a bet FOX made on the latter to get a post-SB boost, and not a good sign for Dads itself. Although with the number of limited series they've ordered, they could literally cancel every live-action comedy except New Girl, order one newbie to pair with it, and not even try and make a comedy block happen again. Especially when they have Utopia to fit in.

Spot said...

So now B99 vs Dads is 14-1, or maybe 13-1 with 1 tie. And The Mindy Project is 15-0 vs Dads ... and that's not important, but it's important when that 1 in 1-29 W-L came? What do you have against math, people?

Dads with 0.2 behind B99 and 0.6 behind Mindy would be surely cancelled ... haven't it already been de facto cancelled long ago with news of order cut and series finale in February.

Spot said...

All I'm saying is that AH and Dads appear to be on the way up with little support, while TF and B9-9 are on the downswing despite being the favored children. Momentum is a powerful force.

Spot said...

I didn't find this remotely surprising given that the promos just underwhelmed me. Which was indicative of the show's quality, such that, despite promising Son Of The Bronx I'd give it a couple more eps of rope, I bailed as soon as the pilot numbers came back DOA.

Spot said...

Indeed. And I can't see it being enough, but I'd certainly renew AH at this point ... Unless the CGI cost makes it the next Terra Nova. Which is possible, I guess, and would certainly explain why they'd be acting like they're not renewing it. Sadly, we don't have those numbers!

Spot said...

There's certainly a big chance of a comedy bonfire when you consider the only thing the entire live-action comedy lineup has going for it is skew. (If you count Glee as a comedy, and FOX does IIRC, this applies to that too.)

AH has the advantage of being able to be plugged in as spackle because it's a procedural. If any of those serials pulls a Lone Star, that's going to get messy without procedural backup (look at ABC Tuesday 10 - BoP would've beaten every original that's aired there all season, at lower cost, but they cancelled it and were left with a rag-bag of reruns for months).

Spot said...

I agree with you. Besides, Body of Proof was performing at 75% of ABC's drama average by season's end while Almost Human is performing at 100% of FOX's drama average now, thus making it a far more attractive option.

Spot said...

So many (including me) thought ABC was smart for dumping Body of Proof, because it was only halfway to syndication numbers, and was hanging in the low-to-mid 1s. I figured that anything that ABC put on Tu@10 was bound to do better. Could not have been more wrong.
