The "Days/Time" post breaks apart big four programming based on the clock and the calendar, examining which nights of the week and which half-hours of primetime are most crowded. At the moment, I'm just putting up tables that look at the big four non-sports originals in each slot, but this section will probably be expanded shortly with tables that widen the lens to overall viewing/overall broadcast viewing tendencies.
These numbers are up to date through the end of the 2013-14 regular season: Wednesday, May 21.

Big four originals season-to-date by day of the week - These numbers index the big four networks' averages in original non-sports series on each day of the week compared to their average across the entire week.
- To keep Sunday on a relatively apples-to-apples basis with the other weekdays, the 7:00 hour is excluded.
- These are based on half-hour breakdowns, not on full program ratings. This is most evident in the 10:00 hour, where virtually everything airs across the whole hour. So you can see pretty clearly how much a program declines from 10:00 to 10:30 on average.

Wow at Sundays. It's fast approaching Friday levels of difficulty for originals.
But double wow at Wednesday. Guessing that's the total collapse of the X, and the crumbling ABC sitcoms?
Wow at Wednesdays. What the hell is that? The X-Factor+Ironside? I find that very surprising, I didn't realize that night was so weak! ABC and CBS have good nights on Wednesdays and even FOX probably does worse on Tuesdays and Thursdays most of the times I imagine. I am very surprised. Probably it's the fact that even though there are a lot of very solid performers, the only real hit there is MF which only lasts for half an hour.
Actually I think Wednesdays are 35% NBC uselessness, 30% X-Factor cratering, 15% CBS shows aging, 15% ABC shows either aging or failing to launch and 5% TTP softness compared to SPN last year. A lot of blame to go around.
Yes, if you look at the networks post, ABC, CBS and Fox all do fine but only a bit above league average. There are no real standout lineups and NBC is weak enough to cancel them out. But the Wednesday number should go up from here unless Idol posts X Factor-esque numbers. (Notice it went up from 106 at this time last year to 114 final.)
It's interesting to me that the ABC/CBS/Fox ratings are roughly the same on Monday and Wednesday and the difference is almost entirely with NBC, which airs the strongest three-hour entertainment lineup on TV on Monday and one of the weakest on Wed. I have felt True was being a bit too generous to Monday shows, but perhaps deservedly so given there are really no weak networks, plus one VERY strong one, plus football.
Yeah, that really makes sense, thanks for taking the time to explain it. It's impressive how NBC is the most unbalanced network and, as a result, kind of dictates the direction of the A18-49 from the league average in each weekday. As for the TRUE Metric, I had realized before that you were very generous to Monday shows yeah, and never understood why, but I guess it does make some sense.
I definitely think that Wednesdays are the most wide open day for an attack from any big 4 network right now (Thursdays are not that bad either, especially at 9). You have to deal with MF on Wednesdays and everyone else is somehow competent at 9pm, but at 8pm and 10pm it's open season for anyone who gives it a serious try. That's why I think CBS should have moved POI to 8pm this year and Survivor to Sundays and why I think next year they really should move Survivor to Sundays and use that slot to launch a new drama, it's better than any 10pm hour they have except maybe Wednesday itself. ABC just needs to get its act together with the .30 shows, it's ridiculous that they loose this night so frequently. FOX is a wildcard here next fall, 100%. As for NBC ,I think they should have The Blacklist anchoring this for them. There are just so many opportunities. Nobody is truly bad for the most part, but nobody is truly exception for the most part either.
I dunno, Wednesday at 8 is pretty much a death slot for dramas.
Revolution
Human Target
Undercovers
Mercy
Jericho
Bones
Pushing Dasies
Alias
Ed
Titans
Hm... That list is a bit scary yes but I am not really sure it can be very telling. In general, I don't buy that timeslots really are deathslots unless there are clear reasons for that and a proven track record for that. You may have the second condition covered but I don't buy the first one. Also, the landscape there has changed so much (The X-Factor is a joke, who knows how weaker AI will be, Survivor and The Middle are just respectable players but hardly big hits, Revolution is hardly a force to be reckoned with) that even the track record may not apply that much. In theory, it should work so if the show has the goods and the marketing, a network should be able to pull it off. ABC is out of of the question since it's their comedy night but I would be up for any of the other three trying it out, but especially CBS because really, the slot has to be better than the 10pm slots they have leading out of the comedy blocks...
I agree. The networks should give up on 10pm and give it back to the affiliates. They can't compete with cable.
