The Question, Wednesday 9/18/13: How Watered Down is Survivor's Audience?

CBS becomes the third network to begin its fall 2013 entertainment schedule with tonight's premiere of Survivor. This season, called "Blood vs. Water," will bring back a slew of former contestants (now old hat on Survivor) and make them compete against significant others and family members. How watered down is Survivor's audience? That's The Question for Wednesday, September 18, 2013.

Survivor Last Season
3.2 (fall premiere, 9/19/12, -6% year-to-year)
2.4 (spring premiere, 2/13/13, -23% year-to-year)
2.86 (fall average, -15% y2y)
2.56 (spring average, -9% y2y)
3.2 (fall finale, 12/16/12, -20% y2y)
2.7 (spring finale, 5/12/13, -7% y2y)

The 2.4 spring premiere was that rare rating result last season that really baffled me. (As opposed to this season, when every result baffles me!) I thought the Fans vs. Favorites concept would bring in a little more initial interest, but instead it brought much less initial interest and more as the season went on. So I don't really know what to expect here, but since last fall's premiere was so close to even, I'm guessing this fall's premiere will be down more once again (though not by as wide a margin).

Over/Under: 2.75.

I am very surprised that everyone is saying Dads launched very well. I mean, sure, expectations were terrible, but it had almost no competition and it will face MAJOR powerhouses in weeks to come. I think it will crash and burn as we all antecipated, I am confused why everyone is so excited about it. B99 did well though, that I agree, but it will have an uphill battle in coming weeks, especially with its lead-in collapsing.

New Girl did better than I thought, I am happy for it, and America's Got Talent is actually some sort of competition, even though far from what the voice will be next week. The Golderbs won't probably hurt it though. I won't even comment on mindy, it is pathetic that it was renewed last year and it will show this season - I doubt Raising Hope couldn't do better there.

Spot, I am curious, why is new girl's true lower than b99? Seems quite harsh to take it 0.3 like that.

My gut's not giving me a read this time, so I'm defaulting to the coin.

Optimism is in abundance tonight. Let's hope that we are all right- BACK TO THE 3's!!

Huge gap in PUT between the 8:30 and 9:00 half-hours. It will probably smooth out somewhat in the half-hour breakdowns.

My strategy to The Question this week (go out, get at least tipsy on a few cocktails, then come home and spell whichever word is easier) is paying dividends so far. Let's keep it going. Over.

(We are either about to have the earliest universally correct or universally wrong answer to The Question.)

I see it more as a 3-and-out scenario for Dads. FOX has back-ups this year.

XF may be fading competition but it's compatible competition. And this is a returning show. I'm going to take a huge risk and go UNDER.

No we're not :)
