Spotted Ratings, Weekend Roundup 9/20-9/22/13

WHAT MATTERS:
  • All of this stuff is very old news by now, so I'll be quick on the details on the last three days of the 2012-13 season. ABC's Friday premiere lineup was a bit of a disappointment, especially The Neighbors as a clear weak link at 8:30.
  • On Sunday, the Emmy Awards were up a stout 26% year-to-year, probably picking up at least a few ticks due to its NFL lead-in. (It dropped in each half-hour: 6.5 -> 5.5 -> 4.9 -> 4.6 -> 4.5 -> 4.1). Despite the big competition, there were series highs aplenty on cable: the penultimate Breaking Bad (3.4), the series finale of Dexter (1.3) and the season finale of Devious Maids (1.1).

NBC's woes return to haunt them on Thursdays. Parks did as much as can be expected, while Parenthood generally held up well in its Thursday move (despite competition from Grey's) but MJF really disappointed. Can it grow next week at 9.30pm? Crazy Ones will be down some as it loses the direct TBBT lead-in and so will 2.5 Men.

Also disappointing for Fox is Glee, but let's see if the Monteith episode 2 weeks from now surprises. Elementary right on last spring's levels, but it and Parenthood will be definitely down some more if Scandal returns up year-to-year next week. And X-Factor still breathing. I hope that changes soon. Haha!

I'm stunned at how low The Michael J. Fox Show rated.

MJF really disappointed me. I was expecting at least a 2.7 or something. That 2.1 is way too low. =|

Hopefully, Sean and Family can get decent ratings next week, but I'm not holding my breath.

Owwwwww. And I was close to calling the Question the other way.

Owwww.

2.5 Men just a tick off a series low, and that series low was up against the first round of the NFL Draft, which will have drawn away a lot more of the show's audience than the beginning of a Thursday Night Football match between two West Coast teams. This is going to be a brutal season for the show on this evidence.

But not as brutal as it will be for Glee. And Glee then has to go through *another* season!

I'm still kind of worried about Person of Interest, but for the record...

CBS 10PM shows

POI: 2.3
Elementary: 2.1
CSI: 2.0
Hostages: 1.8

The Crazy Ones did way better than I expected. Other than that, I think this is the least surprising night so far. Big Bang did better than I thought it would also! Grey's, Two and a Half Me and Elementary did exactly as I expected. I say Parks did a little worse than I thought, but not by much. Glee did worse than I thought it would, it will have a terrible season, especially because historically the show has had some of the biggest post return from hiatus declines. I was expecting something between a 2.0 and a 2.5 for the michael j fox show so this was in line albeit at the lower end. For Parenthood, I agree that given the lead-in is still good, but I have to say that it should have done better considering there was no Scandal. It will have troubles staying north of 1.5 and that is not good at all.

POI is the only show out of those that I watch so I am not biased, but to be fair, we should also say that besides going against a highly rated procedural, it also has the highest rated, most compatible lead-in. Not that it matters. It will still be the 10pm champion for CBS easily I think

Spot said...

I am not 100% sure that another season of Glee will exist, but whatever. We'll see. I doubt it happens anywhere but on fridays in any case.

Also,

@Survivor Fan,

Excellent call last night with the Crazy Ones! I was wrong and you were right! (As consolation prize, I can say I was partially wrong only since I did say that you were under-estimating both Michael J Fox and Crazy Ones though :P)

Spot said...

Is there an out for FOX to not do season 6 after all, then? Because if there is, it sure looks like they're gonna use it.

Underestimate the idiocy of the American viewing public at one's own risk, at least on premiere night. I should've known there was no way either of them was going to be playing in the 3's. Although I also underestimated Big Bang's ability to actually grow year to year this early (it had three straight 4.9's in the 8pm half-hour since its Thursday premiere, how was I supposed to know this was the year it would make the early leap?).

Incidentally, who here actually watched both The Crazy Ones and MJ Fox? And can you tell me if the latter was as execrable as the former?

Spot said...

Not that I am aware of, but seriously, at some point, whatever they have to pay to cancel the contract should be less than the money they loose by keep airing it. There are however two other factors at play here:
1) Glee probably still does quite well in the 18-34 demo and I think FOX bases its decisions on that one, otherwise Mindy would have been canceled last year, Mindy would not have been renewed, etc.

2) There is a very big chance that the x-factor will be gone next fall. That means a lot of real estate will need to be filled. So there should be room for Glee somewhere.

I personally adored the crazy ones I have to say!
