- Fox unofficially kicked off the 2013-14 season in broadcast entertainment programming with the very underwhelming return of The X Factor, which adjusted up in finals to finish only 35% behind the 2012 premiere. It was a one-hour telecast, and a comparison with just the 8:00 hour in 2012 sees it only 23% behind last year's 8:00 hour. (But that 8:00 hour was also a bit deflated because it faced The Voice head-to-head.) Either way, this is a bad start for the three-hour-a-week franchise, which will have to hold up much better than usual to avoid settling below 2.0.
- As for the other Fox hour, the finale of MasterChef had a bigger rating than The X Factor and was two tenths behind last year's finale.
- Meanwhile, NBC's increasingly uneventful "event" The Million Second Quiz dropped two tenths for the second straight night. In this case, MSQ couldn't even beat the usual occupant: America's Got Talent recap specials. And Thursday prelims have it down another two tenths to 1.1.
