Spotted Ratings, Super Bowl Sunday 2/3/13

WHAT MATTERS:

• UPDATE (finals): The Super Bowl ended up with a 39.7 average demo, which was down by 2% from last year's 40.5. The final total viewership was slightly adjusted up to 108.69 million viewers, also down 2%. Nielsen's broadcast top 25 included a separate number for the delay (38.9), which was down a bit from the 8:00 half-hour number (40.2). The game rating quickly rebounded after the delay to a 40.5 from the resumption through 9:30, then grew as high as 42.9 by the end.

• UPDATE (3:50 ET): The fast national numbers are in. The Super Bowl (108.41 million viewers) was not able to parlay its record metered-market number into a viewership record; the game will finish behind both the 2011 and 2012 games, both of which were a little over 111 million.
• Elementary had 20.8 million viewers and a 7.8 adults 18-49 rating. Don't have a demo rating for the game yet, but this will almost certainly be the worst retention of the game numbers both in viewers (19.2%) and in the demo, and the 18-49 rating fell even behind that of 2003's Alias (8.2). It was the oldest-skewing Bowl lead-out in recent years (in terms of comparing viewership with the demo rating), though not drastically moreso than Criminal Minds six years ago (it had 26.31 million and a 10.0). What would it have done if it had started 45 minutes earlier? Your guess is as good as mine, but I kinda doubt it was getting up into the 11's range of The Office and Glee. Based on how other shows have done, it would be surprising if this makes much of a difference to its Thursday numbers.

• The Super Bowl had a 48.1 household number in metered-market ratings. That's a new record (beating the previous record of 47.9) and very slightly ahead of last year's number (47.8). It's close enough that it's not a total slam dunk that it'll set a new viewership record. As we all know by now, there was a 34-minute delay early in the third quarter due to a power outage in the stadium. Nielsen strips this period out of their averages for the game. (Had the 8:45-9:15 period (46.5) been included in metered markets, I estimate the average would've been just a record-tying 47.9.)

• Thanks to the delay, lead-out program Elementary had easily the latest start in SB lead-out history, approximately 11:11 ET. (And CBS didn't really make an effort to offset the delay in their post-game coverage, which was of pretty standard length if not a bit above standard.) It had a 12.0 household number in metered-markets (estimate from 11:15 to 12:15). This puts it well behind at least the last two occupants, Glee (15.3) and The Voice (19.4). It will likely be the lowest 18-49 rating for a lead-out since Alias in 2003 (8.3), but I don't want to speculate too much beyond that.
