Rating the Ratings: There were lots of great returning sitcom stories this season, but perhaps the hardest one to explain was that of How I Met Your Mother. Two and a Half Men had the Sheen/Kutcher transition. Modern Family is still a young show and scored another truckload of Emmys. The Big Bang Theory had massive syndication exposure on TBS. And yet the seventh season of How I Met Your Mother ended up growing more than two of those three (and nearly as much as Big Bang, +24%) without some readily apparent reason to which we can point. Early in the season, I think we kinda attributed it to being within the halo of the Two and a Half Men explosion. But by the beginning of 2012, HIMYM was still growing by double-digits year-to-year while most to all of the year-to-year growth from Men had fizzled out. I think there's kind of a general sense that creatively the show should be winding down, but the ratings this season painted an unbelievably different picture. Grade: A.
Here's the now updated War of 18-49 post for How I Met Your Mother.
