Rating the Ratings: The second BET run for The Game had almost the same trajectory as the first: through-the-roof start, lots of declines, and a pretty consistent level starting around episode seven. Unfortunately, at each step along that way, this season was a lot weaker than The Game's phenomenal debut season. The 2.8 for January 10's one-hour premiere was down 22% from last year's fourth biggest moment in TV ratings, and then most subsequent data points were down in the 30% range. Ultimately, the show settled in the low 1's, which was a far cry from the upper-1's level it found in the back half of season four. I give this season a higher grade than I probably should because 1) it would've been pretty harsh to expect the show to hold close to last year's A+++ season; 2) the -39% is rather inflated simply because this season was so much longer than the last one; again, most year-to-year data points were more like -30%; and 3) even at these depressed levels, it's still got a bigger demo average than in any of its three CW seasons. Grade: C-.
Here's the now updated War of 18-49 post for The Game.
