Rating the Ratings: The first three updates I did for Survivor seasons all had a nice built-in excuse. "It got moved to Wednesday for the first time in a decade!" "It had to face American Idol for the first time!" "It had to face The X Factor for the first time!" This time, I'm out of excuses. If anything, the expectations should've been higher this time since its American Idol competition was down so much. Bottom line: this was just a bad season for Survivor. On extremely healthy CBS, this show was actually one of the largest year-to-year decliners on the whole network, and it got worse as the season progressed, capped off with a finale that was more than a full point behind any previous Survivor finale (though, to be fair, it did go up against the final Desperate Housewives). While I didn't like recent twists like Redemption Island and bringing back two former players, it certainly seems they held the show up better than this older-school season. I still think Survivor will be fine for another couple years, but as with so many other unscripted shows in 2011-12, this was an early warning sign about the show's mortality. Grade: C-.
Here's the now updated War of 18-49 post for Survivor.
