As usual with my year-to-year posts, at the end of each week I take a look at the biggest gainers and losers among adults 18-49. I stick to only original-vs.-original comparisons for these lists.
Top 5 year-to-year show losers
1. America's Next Top Model -60%
2. Nikita (F 8-9pm vs. Th 9-10pm) -50%
3. Bones (M 8-9pm vs. Th 9-10pm) -41%
4. Private Practice (Tu 10-11pm vs. Th 10-11pm) -39%
5. American Idol Wednesday -37%
This list is almost completely overhauled from last week, with only disastrous Top Model returning. Nikita has been a fixture on the list all season thanks to its Friday move, while Bones and Private Practice (which faced the Voice finale) join the list this week thanks to major timeslot downgrades vs. last year. American Idol, which was dominating this list during February, sneaks back on this week, and the Thursday edition was a very close sixth.
Top 5 year-to-year show gainers
1. Shark Tank +50%
2. The Big Bang Theory +47%
3. American Dad! (Su 9:30-10pm vs. Su 7:30-8pm) +44%
4. Mike and Molly +35%
5. Rules of Engagement +23%
On the heels of its first-ever full season renewal, Shark Tank is on top. As last week, most of the rest of the list is CBS sitcoms, with the return of American Dad! benefiting from its major timeslot upgrade.
Top 5 year-to-year timeslot losers
1. Awake vs. 30 Rock/Outsourced (NBC, Thursday 10-11pm) -61%
t-2. America's Next Top Model (CW, Wednesday 9-10pm) -60%
t-2. The LA Complex vs. Hellcats (CW, Tuesday 9-10pm) -60%
t-2. Harry's Law vs. Celebrity Apprentice (NBC, Sunday 8-9pm) -60%
5. Nikita vs. Smallville (CW, Friday 8-9pm) -53%
It was a pretty brutal week for the CW, as a whooping 30% of their schedule was not able to pull half the ratings of the year-ago occupant. Awake and Harry's Law both return from last week's list.
Top 5 year-to-year timeslot gainers
1. The Voice vs. Chuck/The Event (NBC, Monday 8-10pm) +210%
2. Off Their Rockers vs. Minute to Win It (NBC, Wednesday 8-9pm) +71%
t-3. Shark Tank (ABC, Friday 8-9pm) +50%
t-3. Smash vs. Law and Order: Los Angeles (NBC, Monday 10-11pm) +50%
5. The Big Bang Theory (CBS, Thursday 8-8:30pm) +47%
A rising The Voice gave NBC one last chart-topping performance and will pass the mantle off to America's Got Talent next week. That also helped Smash make the list. The presence of Off Their Rockers just goes to show how much worse it is possible for NBC to do against American Idol. I'd expect that to return in some capacity. The other two shows on the list were actually same-timeslot comparisons that topped the show list as well.
